What makes Zenia pulse?

I bought a frag of pumping/pulsing zenia elongata and it was pumpimg so much at the store that I couldn't resist purchasing it. I've had it for about 5 months now, and while it has spread, it barely pumps. Could it be because the store has MH lighting and I have LEDs? They do pump once in awhile but nothing close like they were in the store.

How much flow do you have? Too much (although they seem to like it) will cause them to lose their pumping effect.

Pumping is also a sign that they are healthy and happy.

I kinda had the same experience with xenia looked good in the store got it home and wasnt doing much. I run leds as well, but what i noticed about the xenia and the pulsing was when i moved it out of the water flow and into a really slow moving spot it started pulsing like crazy and has done it ever since. .02 cents.

I was reading that low alkalinity may also cause them to stop. I have intermittent flow where they are growing.

I do remember that the frag rack where they were kept had little to no flow. I guess I'll be moving my powerhead. Thanks guys.

I'm gonna try to get them to grow on the back glass of my tank.

Medium flow, medium to high light, alk > 8, and supplement with iodine will make them pulse nicely. Anytime my alk drops below 7 or so they look sick, but get right back as soon as my alk goes up above 8.

i have have some that is right in the main flow.it does great.it actually seems to be growning toward the flow and not away from,but mine does the same thing when alk gets low,it stops pulsing and starts to close up.check your params

Less flow will get you more pumping. But higher flow gets less pumping and more growth. They seem(at least IME) to like to be blown around a good bit for the best growth. I traded all but about 5 stalks last weekend. Up to about 13 when I did a head count this morning.

Mine is still pumping, it's been in a tank without a return pump and one k2 in a 65 for flow for 5 days now. I had the best growth under PC though..

Under PC?? Wow, who would have known? I thought they would do best under MH.
