I think I'll just let Randy say it all:
That said, I do not think that iodine or strontium are useful supplements, but calcium, magnesium and alkalinity certainly can be.
As for the frontier of reef science, I think that organics of various sorts, from amino acids to carbon dosing to vitamins to toxins, is an area with big uncertainties and possible benefits as well as detriments that may or may not become more clear in the next few years. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif" alt="" />
I'd also say that there is substantial uncertainty about potassium and bromide, how and whether they get depleted, how to measure them, whether supplements are useful, whether overdoses are bad, etc. Same may apply to sulfate.
