What to do with salt water?

All,

Had a plan to buy a tank tomorrow from a forum member but it looks like I am getting stood-up and will not be getting it afterall (different story for a different day). Anyway, I have now accumulated over 150 gallons of saltwater, that I had prepared for putting in the new tank/sump. It is currently in ~11 plastic totes (with tops) of various sizes. Is there anything I can do to salvage this or am I 'SOL'?

The whole situation blows, but at least I can hang on to the rinsed substrate I guess. The water and the (now dissolved) bucket of reef salt I'm guessing are just to be sacrificed to the fish-keeping gods.

Any help or thoughts are appreciated.

You can keep the SW as long as you keep it circulating... though that would be easier to do in, say, 3 or 4 big trash cans than 11 totes.

I wasn't going to throw out any names until I understand the full story. Given that the deal had been made for a week and I found out at the last second though I am obviously not pleased.

I've got two 32 gallon trash cans that I use for salt water that you're welcome to come and borrow. Consolidate as much as you can, then put a circulation pump in there and it will keep. The keep is to keep it circulating. Heck...worst case....sell it for say 50 cents a gallon. I'm sure some members here would buy it.

I only have one powerhead as of now. Will a powerhead do the trick or do I need more circulation than that?

I had been rotating it amongst the containers, but I obviously can't keep that up forever. Wouldn't seem to make a lot of sense to go buy a bunch more to save the water I guess. I do have one 30+gallon container that I suppose I could salvage.

How long will it keep? I plan on starting to look for another set-up but its tough to tell how long that could take.

As long as it's circulating.....technically it'll keep indefinately. There's nothing that would use up the nutrients in it other than evaporation. I've also got a Mag 5, a Mag 7 and another pump you could borrow to keep it circulating. A powerhead would work in a 5 gallon bucket but it's not going to work in a larger container.....although I'm using an 802 to circulate a 55g container of RODI water.

what size tank are you looking for and for how much. I think I know a member that has a nice 150-ish bowfront setup for sale.

I buy water from my neighbor and keep it in 5 gallon totes for up to a month. Are yall saying that it could go bad and i should not do that?

I have used anything from a couple of Maxijets to a Mag 9 in a 32g Brute, depending on what wasn't being used at the time. A reasonable PH per container is fine. All you are trying to do is keep it from being stagnant.

So, for the water I was just looking to keep it viable for tank use if I can, but realistically it would not make financial sense to spend too much to accomplish that. But as you all are well aware, there is definitely a PITA factor to pulling together that much water...


For the other tank mentions, I thought I had looked at most of the stuff for sale so if I missed some things feel free to PM me the details (or a link to the for sale post).

I am fairly open for what I am looking for, but generally a larger tank (100-150), built in overflows, nice stand, canopy etc, and as much 'other stuff' as possible, but all of that is really dependent on price.

Better check out Assault's tank. Knowing him, it's A+. Also, send a PM to Jeff.McPhail....he had a really nice bow front tank complete setup for sale. Don't know if he sold it or not, that was about a month or so ago.

The lids are certainly tight to help with evaporation, but they are not air tight. These are just the 'Rubbermaid' type storage totes. Most are in my basement storage room, but a few of them are on the covered back porch as I ran out of room.
