Hi just joined.
Sold my old 55g oceanic tank in Dec, kind of wishing I didn't let go of my 30 lbs LR for $60 along with it. Found a great deal on 29 g biocube, and I have a birthday coming up so I'm thinking about what I want to do with it. Maybe a pair of clowns, and a 6 line (malinaris?) wrasse. And coral, I've never ad coral before. Last time around I jumped the gun and bought fish that are not reef safe. This time I have plenty of time to plan carefully, it will be a little while before I can afford LR. What would you do with a 29g biocube? I'm open to any ideas.

Me? I'd sell it or give it away and buy a different tank.

Of course, that's simply due to mine having split on the bent glass corner at about 4:00am one morning.

That was all the experience I needed in bent glass. (and you can search out biocube 29 disasters. I'm not alone in this).

Make sure you do your homework on a 6 line wrasse. One 6 line can cause havoc to others. They can be pecular eaters also.

don't you bad mouth 6 lines...lol I love those guys.
I have two

If it was me I would do an all anemone/ clown tank (I've been wanting to do one for a while though).

As for live rock you could always check the for sale section of the forum. I saw someone was selling LR for 1.50 per Lb earlier today, thats a killer price.

Good Luck!

I have a 29 gallon biocube and wish I could have something with a sump. Not having a sump has really limited my options for equipment.

Pair of fire fish. Orange, purple, or helfrichi. And u would still have room for a larger bio load. Midas blenny?

I retrofitted a 29 gallon biocube with a closed loop, external pump for a chiller, external skimmer and150 watt halide one day with my friend. He has a pair of Maroon Clowns, Shrimp/Goby Pair and a bunch of Rose Anemones and Pompom Xenia. Its a nice looking little tank and I like that it has so much color and life. It also all stocked with Tonga Branch rock. It is also on a custom stand that someone built for us that came out very nice.

My brother has a 6 line, as far as I know it hasn't caused him any problems. He has like a 125g tank with a lot of stuff in it. Also I heard they were pretty good for eliminating bristle worms etc and the one they used to have at Atlanta Aquarium was just beautiful. I always liked to watch him swim too. I already have a 29 gal rectangle (normal) tank and PVC overflow 5 gal bucket sump.. And just got rid of a 55 gal corner overflow with model 75 trickle filter sump. I think all of that is cool but is there really a lot necessary customization necesarry for a biocube? I don't even understand what a protein skimmer does. I have never come near having an excess of biomass in a tank though maybe that's why I never figured out why I might need one. Thanks for all the suggestions as to what you might put in them though, I have never had coral before and I def want at least a couple, and hopefully I can get the clowns to host a bubble tip.. My old maroons hosted a condy nem after putting them in a bucket together for a while, my saddlebacks just stayed in the corner of the tank. I have seen that here we good deals for LR on here, that is a relief! I'll look into the firefish and other suggestions, keep em coming!

Anybody else think a 29 gal biocube (improved model) isn't worth $240?

Yeah, for live rock definitely keep an eye on the for sale forum. You could also use some dry rock to start you off too and just seed it with a piece or two of live rock.

I know a few people that have used biocubes in the past. They used waste removing media and did water changes frequently and had good luck with them. Their main complaints were the lights needing to be upgraded to keep hard corals and running out of space really quickly. If you get one be sure to plan out what you want carefully.

One good thing is if I ever buy something that doesn't work out, my brother and his room mate likely have a tank for it. If not, he will quickly find a good home. But I understand that it is not good for the fish to be moved around a lot and also it's not good on my pocket to not plan carefully! Will clownfish spawn with tank mates? I've been meaning to buy a book on the subject

I honestly dont know if a pair of clowns will spawn in a 28g tank. I have never had more than one clown at a time in any of my tanks. If they do I would imagine that a vast majority of the eggs would get eaten or the babies would. Not a lot of places to hide from other inhabitants in a biocube not to mention feeding the fry. You would probably have to catch them for good survival. I think several people on this forum have successfully spawned clowns and can help you.
