I had this guy for two years now. He started rubbing against stuff and now swims in circles on the top of the tank near the vortech.

It sounds like the same thing that my purple tang did. He got disorineted and within in just covered in velvet. I read about something like this and the articel said that this was caused by an ingestion of some kind of parasite that they get ffrom the wild...which sd to say they know of no cure. I feel for you and good luck.

I feel that the best person to contact on this would be Jennm at Image Ocean you can send her a pm...she answers very promptly. Mike

No aggression, all my fish have been together forever... He took only a couple bites but mostly was not interested. And only when I dropped the food in his face.

Jenn, Dylan and Jeremy would be the three people I would look to. If it is an external parasite a fresh water dip may help but I would do it solely on my recommendation. But from the picture my first impression was something internal that is now showing external signs.

Fish disease diagnosis is very difficult. Some things that stood out to me-

The patches on the skin

Doesn't have a sunken belly, but not really eating aggressively

No aggression from tank mates

I don't think it is HLLE. That would creat more of a discolored pitting, and generally shows the most around the face and lateral line.

If you don't see ick, or any other external parasite, I am leaning toward internal.

Bacterial infections are usually red/swollen

Fungal infections- It doesn't look like a fungal infection.

I am guessing internal

Not sure if it is just me but the lower area with the white blotch looks a bit swollen but just above it near the top it looks like an indentation of some sort. He didn't get stuck to a power head did he?

From my experience, it looks like a parasite and or some internal disease....def not HLLE.
You can QT him or just try to feed heavy and keep em all happy, good luck bud and let me know if you want to QT. I got an empty 58 gallon at the house...

I got QT, thanks. I also have a nice big sump. I'm thinking sump, unless there any meds involved. Whatever he's got is already in the tank...

His belly skin has pilled off... still swimming.... I tried catching him but he fled immediately. He ate some yesterday but it almost looks like he can't see the food.

Not ich or HLLE, I concur.

Mechanical injury gone infected maybe? Hard to say - can't tell a whole lot from the photos.

Not sure what to suggest...

I had a very similar story happen to me accept it was a purple tang that was actin crazy. I had added a powder blue and the both died a few days later. I've always wondered. I think I may have added too much buffer. I'm a rookie but figured I'd share my exp.

Yes, if I remember correctly. I do remember having to turn off skimmer and remove carbon for it to be effective, but don't recall if it was reef safe.
