Whats keeping you from becoming a supporting member?

We’ll we pretty much did speaker up until covid hit. We’re just now starting to get back into more and more meetings. The throng about speakers if they were hit or miss. Like I said in a different thread, we’d have amazing speakers come to share on a topic and no one would show up. Now when they said there was a frag swap attached to it then there would be a large crowd, except they’d be talking over the speaker. At our current venue I think a speaker would be difficult. Back at the medical building the off 75 they had the nice room divider they used from time to time. Then again we had people not happy it was at the same place in town.

Yeah I remember some of the frag swaps had a separate room meeting which was a great idea for speakers.

I think if we started slow though, with actual speakers directly from the club, although not professional, still have some folks with spectacular tanks that could certainly give us some helpful info?

We tried hosting nationally recognized speakers during COVID, doing talks via ZOOM.

It was a time to test reinventing our conventional way of having a club ‘meeting’, if you will. We were stretching for ways to keep us all engaged, besides the online forums. Trying to maintain our sense of community, engagement & interaction. Without meeting in person. Desperate times called for new ways of doing club business.

We have members that are capable & willing to give talks for the club. In addition to a list of available industry speakers. The BOD has voted to become supporting members of MASNA, known for putting on MACNA. One benefit is access to their list of speakers.

FWIW,
Preparing for a talk is a lot of work, to do it well. We should respect that and support these efforts by attending in numbers that justify the effort.

Talks dont NEED to be in person. You can post helpful videos on topics similar to what BRStv does on youtube.
That is a great idea! That could definitely something that would be supporting member only extra value.

To add to that, if somebody didn’t feel comfortable having all the people come to the house for a “show of tanks,” they could just walk everybody through a detailed explanation of their settings, equipment, etc by phone vid.

You sound like my wife.
Well, to his point, it would require a lot of volunteer effort the make something like this happen. I'd love to get a volunteer that's familiar with YouTube to put up short videos of our events. Maybe solicit other short videos from members? Good stuff!

@ichthyoid is pointing out that each of these ideas takes work on someone's part and right now we're limited on volunteers? ARC Social events? Volunteers needed. Tour of Tanks? Volunteers needed. Sponsor videos? Volunteers needed. Right now ARC is limited only by the number of folks who have time to volunteer.

I will offer this slight delineation from Justin’s comments above. Instead of saying-

“Right now ARC is limited only by the number of folks who have time to volunteer.”

We might be better off saying-

‘Right now ARC is limited only by the number of folks who take time to volunteer.’

Why?
Because we all have the same 24 hours in a day. How we spend that time is a matter of choice!

The Palisades Medical Building has been closed to use for the last year or so, they remodeled. That is why we have not been back there and bounced around looking for a place that will work for us and be a good alternate so we're not in the same spot repetitively making it easier for members.

Last November we did a Zoom video meet with a speaker, Richard Ross. There were only a handful of people that took part.

To get to the points raised. We have tried many of the things that have been brought up in this thread. But when we setup quality speakers and there are hardly any members that take part it doesn't look good for the club and makes it harder to get them to come back. Word also gets around with these people and that in turn makes getting good individuals to come to Atlanta or do virtual presentations even harder. That is why we haven't attempted to do it again.

Covid was a bad time all around. Switching to zoom was a challenge in itself, with problems scheduling speakers, and I believe part of the reason for low turnout for some of the speakers on zoom was due to changing schedules and short notice. Looks like the Richard Ross meeting was only announced two days before, and the Sept. 26 Marc Levinson meeting was announced on Sept 8. I'd love to get back to having speakers again, preferably scheduled well in advance to allow planning and promotion. I also really enjoyed enjoyed meetings like to the phyto plant, Reef Farm, etc.

That's one thing I have noticed my self stuff is almost scheduled last minute. It would be nice to know about things a few months ahead of time

Fwiw,
Speakers are normally set up months in advance. We were in the midst of the 2nd round of COVID and in unchartered territory. Looking for new ways to facilitate interaction.

While things could have been done better, it proved the concept worked, and we learned from it.

Planned and announced are two different things. Something can be planned for 6 months. But if it's not announced until two weeks before it does no good.

I love the tank tour idea. I've not been the most active here over the years, but I've gone to a few events and met several club members in that time. It's cool having people to talk to about reefing, but I've never gotten to see someone's tank in person, and that's one of the things I'm really interested in.
