which is better pump in or out of the sump

Depending on space and how much water you want to move. Most of the time an internal pump would probably sufficient and more convenient. It also has less chance of flooding. But then I have been using an external Dart pump from the beginning of my hobby which probably is around 5 yrs now.

The biggest reason to use external pumps is flow requirements... you will only find internals up to a certain size range. The externals also heat the water less, but the trade off is water that is not in or over a container.

I have always used internal even on my current 210

1. You dont have room
2. You need extra heat in the system

unless you take noise, less chance for a flood into account. i generally agree with your statment but internal is not a bad way to go either

Any reason to not mount your external above the sump so if it leaks you at least have a chance of the water going back into the sump rather than flooding? Heck, you could even easily design a spray shield to go around out so if it did spray it would all still go back into the sump. You know, like one of those things we put around man's best friend's neck after we cut their ****s off. Are external pumps not capable of handling an 8-12" suction?

A centrifugal pump in almost all situations needs to be gravity fed.

You can put an external pump above the water line you just need a check valve so it does not lose its "prime".
