which wrasse to choose

I have decided to get a wrasse as my next fish for my 75g reef. Leaning toward a mystery wrasse. Any suggestions - both on benefits and appearance?

Mystery wrasse are one of my favorite fish! I purchased one from MvM several years ago, when they were really hard to find. It was one of my "dream" fish. Got him home and in 24hrs....he killed my Scarlett Cleaner Shrimp that I'd had for like 3yrs. :doh:

Then he started nipping at my clams and harrassing my Sunburst Anthias.....:shout:
(He was a model citizen for MvM, a terror for me)

I sold him to a friend that had a FOWLR system and he got along just fine.
This is just my experience with one individual though. Others successfully keep them with inverts in reefs all day long. Just wasn't meant to be for me. Still a gorgeous fish in my book!

Exactly. Everyone seems to have such mixed feelings about them. I may just give it a shot and see what happens.

that thing is pretty sweet looking. wasnt familiar with them until now. very interesting. any trouble with them?

from what i've read they rely heavily on pods for food, so you'll need a good size population of them

my sixline was great with the clowns i introduced at the same time...any fish after that he tormented...also killed a couple peppermint shrimp...he grew to be about 2.5 inches...i gave him to a friend who had a much larger tank with larger fish and he supposedly began being territorial with them too...might try a small one and add him last cause they look so cool but ill keep an eye on the lil *******

The leopard wrasse is awesome! I bought one last month and it looks amazing :thumbs:

It can take a little while to get them to eat frozen food, but once they start accepting it, you are good to go.

Get a pair of leopards U will love them.

leopards are my favorite. Got mine over a year ago. Pods heavy at first but now he eats like a pig.

They are very delicate shippers, initially are difficult to get to eat, need sugar fine sand to sleep, and should be treated with prazi-pro at first.

That sums it up about leopard wrasses. Some other species too, for that matter. If you can get them past the first few weeks and get them eating, they're great. But they are tricky to get to that point.

Look into lighting wrasse, Might get a little to big for your tank, but up to you.
