Ok for the life of me I am trying to figure out why my largest fish hide so much. Tank is 135 about 125lbs of live rock, I have tried to make a good home for any fish I put in my tank. Everyone gets along fantastic but every time I approach the tank my main three biggest fish 2 tangs and a wrasse hed for dem der hills. If they see I am putting food in then they come up. I try not to put my hand in the tank to scare them, but I cant figure out why there so skittish.

How long have you had them? My guess is they just need to get used to the "Big Old Scary Thing" that comes up every now and a again. LOL While the fish I have had seem to adapt to me in a few weeks to a month, it could just be them getting used to you. Or, do you have young kids maybe that get "Active" around the tank? Might be that things they do are scaring them and think all humans will do things to scare them. Who knows?

I do have two children, 6 and 8 and have told them many times if there approaching the tank not to stomp around or hit the tank. I have had the tank since December and these guys have been in there a few months. Had fish many years ago that use to come up to me when I came to the tank, would eat from my hand. I guess having kids who knows what they do when your not looking.

Edit:

Yep I agree LOL, your crazy HAAAA

My blue hippo did this for a few weeks. What I did was I sat about 5 feet from the tank, she came out and swam around. Id make slow movements. Every few days, move a bit closer and move around more until you can walk right by the tank. Works for me!

lol maybe, but works every time tell your wife or kids to try it since for you it might be akward. BTW I am a female just in case you thought I needed therapy. For the record my husband thinks I'm crazy too.

Just wait until they are 22 and 20! You will have no idea why they do the things they do. All you can do is shake head and pray you make it through. LOL OK, once in a while I pray THEY make it through but I have learned they will be fine, it is me I have to worry about. Hehehehe

You may not interact with them that much so they are spooked wen they see you I hand feed my fish and shrimp every day so now wen I work in the tank they follow me around new arrivals take a week or so. I guess seeing other fish eat from hand they stop seeing you as a threat

My tangs are skittish UNLESS I put my hand in the tank, they they are looking for shrimp

Ok found the problem. I heard my kids downstairs like they were playing with something. Running around saying blahhhhhhhh ok your turn. I slowly came down the stairs and saw the little rascals trying to scare the fish. I asked them how many times have they done this. Now I know why my poor guys are skittish. Needless to say I put some fear in them, they wont be doing that again. Now I have a wait to see if my fish will calm down.

Had a feeling that would be the case. I guess it comes from having raise 3 of my own. LOL

I would suggest that you start a thread of your own, list all of your equipment, water test results, etc. and then ask your questions. Lots of people here will be happy to try to help you out. :-)
