Hey all! I was just down in Pensacola Beach for a long weekend and thought I'd share my findings. There was sporadic seaweed floating along the shore and were all kinds of stuff in it. Caught little filefish, shrimp, crabs and the frog and file fish I took pictures of. caught'em with my hands :-) No i didn't keep them...

I probably looked a little crazy pocking around in seaweed...

Very cool.

We took my daughter's school to Jekyl Island for a few days last fall and the kids had a blast collecting critters from the water. They caught shrimp, crabs, jelly fish, a puffer, and other kinds of fish.

That's a frog fish? That thing is awesome looking, thanks for sharing!

Funny I caught the exact same things down shore in seaside. That fish is a sargassum fish. I caught one too. They must have been stalking the baby filefish.

I caught a bunch of pipefish also.

Oh wow, you're right. I just assumed it was a frogfish. I did wonder why it wasn't on the bottom. He was floating around withing the seaweed and had fins fully extended just like the pictures on google. Thanks for clarifying!

Sargassum fish are a type of frog fish, and usually hang out in sargassum weed, a type of macro algae. I used to see them off of the east coast of Florida a lot, as a kid. I kept one for a long time in a tank with a toad fish, which is related to scorpion fish. I used to wonder which would eat the other. They were both PIGS, and would eat anything they could swallow. I caught them both bare handed.

nice find Landon. I saw one in the keys a few weeks back. Would make an interesting pet...

Nice catch.

I'll be heading down to Pennsacola Beach for Blue Angels weekend.

Luckily, my grandmother lives nearby (in Gulf Breeze) so she knows all the little places that are crazy good and not too expensive either. We did decide to spring for a hotel room on the beach for the weekend though... that way, there's not far to go after the show and adult beverages that will be consumed during said event.

Maybe I can catch something other than a jellyfish, which I got plenty of last time.

I sent this from my phone earlier where I could not see the pics. All I saw was tiny pipe fish. That guy is huge. I didn't want to bring anything back, but my son freaked when I let the sargassum go. I brought home one file fish that was about 1/2" We caught a ton of files, some tiny white crabs, various specious of shrimp. One of them actually looked like a sexy shrimp. I go to Seaside multiple times a year, but have never seem so much life. But then again, I've never really looked. So far the file fish is swimming around and picking at the rocks.

That's awesome.. I was there for easter, there was a red flag at the beach so we couldn't really explore like I wanted to, but the next day we were out in navaree beach, bayside, and I was surrounder by peppermint shrimp, they were all over me! My four year old knew exactly what they were too.. it was cool.
