I have a rock coated in coraline and I would like to put it in my tank. It has a purple encrusting monti on it as well. When I get coral I usually remove the rock its on but thats not possible with the monti on it. I also fresh water dip all coral I get. If I fresh water dip this rock will it kill the coraline algae on it.

I know when I expose my rock with coralline to just air for couple of minutes, it will kill it. Fortunately, since my system has full of it, it would just encrust over it after couple of weeks.

Not to sidetrack, but are there any benefits in a FW dip on a coral? From reading in the past, I understood there was virtually no benefit in it (and potential harm).

I've seen pests hitch hike. I'm sure some other sort of dip would be best. I'm still learning so....

Oh for sure! The issue of unwanted hitchhikers is always there, but from my understanding, many (if not most) of them can tolerate FW without issue.

Blake,
I wouldn't think you would hurt it too long in FW for a shot time period, but you could avoid any issues by using CoralRx and just dipping the rock instead.

Tim and Keen sells these single shot Coral Rx vials you add to 1 gallon of water that are only $3 each.

Not saying it is bad to FW dip corals, as I am not too familiar with the practice, but I have not heard of many folks doing that.

you can put it in freshwater for about a minute leave it out for a minute and that will usually kill the coraline. however if you put it back in a tank with all the right chemicals it will come right back.

id say you'll be fine.. just take care of the coral...

the algae... is.....

well.. algae :)

I do notice that the FW dip will slightly bleach the sps for a couple of weeks but it comes back pretty quick. I havent seen any ill effects towards my lps. I think I want to try the iodine dip on my birdsnest. Something layed an eggsack under it and ever since my polys dont seem to want to come out. Sometimes I can see little things crawling on the bottom
