As we were getting ready for work, my wife walked into the den and came back saying "your tank is making an awful noise". I've only had the new tank up about a month! I was thinking it was the water level being low and the return pump gurgling. It was...that and the skimmer, and the powerhead for the UV sterilizer!!!! I didn't realize it at first, but there was about 3" of water in my stand!! I had no idea what was going on, but my first thought was that my sump had busted or was leaking. To make a long story short, I got all the water out with my shop vac, and realized the UV was leaking and was fried. Somehow, it wasn't sealed good or the seal had broken and water got to the power source. So the good news is that my sump seems to be ok and my caulking in my stand seems to have held up. The bad news is that my 25watt gamma UV is shot. I think we're extremely lucky nothing flooded bad or caught fire. (I'm also real lucky my wife didn't go crazy on me his morning!!!)

same thing happened with me and an 18w turbo twist UV - tossed it in the garbage and never looked back

HA! Since I didn't actually design the stand, I think the nomination needs to be thrown out! All I did was apply caulk and Killz. (Some actually did get on the carpet, but I think I got it up quickly enough. There wasn't much.)

I can't remember what kind of UV sterilizer I had but, it was hell to get it to run without leaking. I remember having a nudibranch that turned out missing but found it live and well stuck in the UV tubes.

It seemed to kill off all my good bacteria and find my tanks better off without it.

New UV : 159.99 on Mastercard
Calk : 5.99 on Mastercard
Not getting a butt kicking from the wife : Priceless

Sorry to hear about the mess! this isn't the first time i have seen a Gamma UV fail. When i worked at a shop in savannah, 6 out of 12 of the 25w Gamma UV's that we sold ended up leaking and flooding someone's living room. Coincidence or bad fixtures? I think they stopped making them about a year ago.

Wow! Yeah, I think I understand why they stopped making them. It worked well on my old setup, but it's garbage now.

exactly why I threw away a turbo twist 4 or so years ago and never looked back, after the 2nd uv flooded and charged my whole system which in turn killed everything but a few fish that was it. There isn't enough benefit as far as I'm concerned to warrant the expense and use of a uv.
