I like the look of chromis schools but...... 25 dollars for ONE chromis is bananas! These people are crazy.

No they're just the reg cheapo green chromis. This place is high on everything though. This one just shocked me. I can go right across town and get them for 5 dollars!!
I don't know of where you speak (don't want to either)... but I can tell you that the chromis I have in stock are more than the $4.99 Indo ones, because they are from Fiji (and they COST more). They aren't $25 but they are closer to $25 than to $5...
And I haven't had a single one die since I received them Jan. 5. The Indo ones, you start with 5, end up with 3, start with 7, end up with 4, etc.
Just saying - if they are from Fiji they are going to be more expensive than the tiny little fragile Indo ones.

Are the Fiji chromis a different species? Do you have the scientific name for them? This is Erin by the way, I met you last weekend @ the congress center. I had the 600 tank I am trying to set up and was interested in doing a school of chromis. Thanks
They are all Chromis verdis. In Fiji they tend to collect larger ones, the divers are likely paid a bit better than in Indo also. The way they are packed and shipped from country of origin to the US most likely differs too. Being that they are inexpensive, they are often packed MANY to a single large bag, and as such, they become more vulnerable to infections and ammonia burns as many fish defecating in a bag makes the water go south pretty quickly.
Once they are Stateside, most wholesalers pack them one per bag, but by then, the damage may already be done. Usually if they are going to get sick and die, they do so within a short period of time.
I much prefer the Fiji chromis - yes they are more expensive, but the most expensive fish, is a DEAD fish (financially, ecologically etc.).

George at Pure Reef was telling me one day that the reason a lot die over time has to do with the feeding. He was quoting out of a coral reef magazine that they feed often during the day on the reef and in our tanks they really do not get to eat often enough. That is believed to cause their demise with them hitting each other due to shortage of food. Shipping, handling, and the catching part is probably the other factor.

I am pretty sure you are talking about a blue reef cromis from the Keys.

They are hardy but will get much larger. It is the only Chromis that I bring in. Not that I was the one with it priced that high. I sell mine for $22 and come directly from the diver in the Keys.

Thats understandable. No money in livestock from what ive heard. Im looking for coral right now anyways. Well.... and some more chromis haha

It has nothing to do with money! It has everything to do with principle. There is a sequence in which they should go into the system IMO. If it were about margins I would just raise my prices.
Oddly enough some of us are not in this for the money but the hobby and for the well being of our systems.

well thats good to hear!
What is the life span of chromis fish?? I only ask because I had one chromis (from a stock of 5) but he had survived all the crap I threw at him while learning this hobby. He disappeared probably a month and half ago despite moving all of my rock all around. I had had him for over 3 years. :sad:
