Yellow watchman

I want to take the glass tops off my tank. Will my watchman jump?

They will jump if they get spooked. A YWG was my only fish to ever jump After I moved the rock where he was housing for a few months he jumped out.

I've had my YWG for 3 years and never seen him off the sand bed. The only jumpers I've had are a dottyback and a wrasse.

Any of the gobies will jump if they get spooked or something in the tank is not to there liking.

I've had different fish in my 30 gallon, a watchman, a hawkfish, a filefish and a chalk bass. They all jumped out, some more than once, even with just a 2"x4" area uncovered for the auto feeder. I lost three out of the four. I don't know how people with open tops do it.

I guess my wife's YWG is afraid of heights... it stays under rocks 99% of the time, and I have literally never seen her more than 3" off the substrate. Anything sudden and she bolts downward. Go figure.

I finally meshed over the hole for the autofeeder on the 30, and this evening I built mesh tops for the new 120... My experience so far is if there is a hole for them to escape, they will find it, and they aren't smart enough to learn from the first time if they are lucky enough to survive. Still, I see lots of open top tanks without even a mesh cover. Nothing wants to stay in mine though.

I tran open tops for almost a year before I got the watchman with no issue. I just like the way open tops looks. Thanks fir the input guys. I think he's okay, him and the pistol have their burrow and he never leaves the sand bed.

My Yellow Watchmen is under a coral on the sand all the time. That being said, my tank is "jump proof" so I can't say for sure. I had a Mandarin Dragonette jump once years ago, you wouldn't think they had the energy or speed...

The light looks great man. Got some new phoenix 14k's and it looks awesome. Wish I had gotten some halides sooner. In the middle of building a canopy for it.
