So the other day I was at wally world and was looking at kitty litter due to reading that refuguem mud is nothing but 100% clay, and that others have started using 100% clay kitty litter in place of the mud. While looking I found some other kitty litter that is advertised as 100% silica free zeolite sand, made from volcano rock. Anyone heard of this? Would it work in a reef system? The price is about the same as sand from a LFS but I am thinking that if it is even close to the zeolite carbon that they sell at stores that it might work better than regular sand for filtering out nitrates.

Best way to find out is to try it! ....Maybe in a tank that you don't mind experimenting with.

Careful with eny zeliot product it removes amonium not nitrates and can cause brow out and stn in a sps tank not sure on softies if you use it add very very very slowly maybe 1oz per 10 gal per week depending on how the corals react

These are a class of compounds, not just a single type of material. They have chemical properties that depend on both what they contain, and how they are constructed. Those properties can vary considerably (some will deplete calcium from solution, a bad thing in a reef tank)

Before you run off and try something that might eventually break your heart, I suggest you do some reading. Here is a start-
