My 1000 heater is has been running 24/7 for the last 3 weeks. I'm trying to justify spending the money to complete my Fish room build out. I'm having trouble with the math can anyone help me?

1 Problem is i cant seem to find the $ per Kilowatt hour rate on my EMC bill. i guess i don't no how to read it.

Does 1000watts heater /hour = 1 kilowatt hour?

Ya it's close to .12 so that's about right.

It's a lot cheaper if you can figure out a way to temp control the room. If you have the room at about 74 then you will rarely need to heat or cool.

Now obviously if you have to coll/heat a whole floor to do that then it's probably not worth ti but if you can control a small room it is.

Personally I use my basement as the equalizer. In the winter I can shut the fish room up and it stays fairly warm in there with the heaters only kicking in a few hours a night. In the summer I open it up and let the heat dissapate and my chiller has never kicked on! It only comes on when i have people coming over in the summer so i shut the fish room up!

1kwph * 0.12 kw per hour cost = 0.12 per hour (easy I know)

0.12 per hour * 3 hours per night * 100 cold nights = $36 per year

I don't know if a 1000w of heat pulls 1000w or not, but it is probably a number pretty close. My numbers are total guesstimates, but $36 per year isn't bad. If they are running 24x7 for a month you are looking at the number above which would suck.

Thanks guys,
Yeah Those tanks are in a section of my garage. I was suppose to have built out a wall and insulate that one wall. After that it would be easy to keep that fish room at a 72-74 degree temp.

Thanks to you guys helping me come up with that $86 / month. I can get a OK form the wife.

The summertime rate where I live is around $0.10 per KWH, the winter rate is closer to $0.08.

1000W heater on for an hour = 1000 Watt Hours (WH) = 1 Kilo Watt Hour (KWH)

1 KWH * 24 hours = 24 KWH

24 KWH * .10 $/KWH = $2.40 per day

$2.40 * 30 = $72.00 per month worst case...

What about the energy budget for your entire aquarium?

Return Pump(s) 40w
Powerhead(s) 60w
Skimmer Pump(s) 85w
Refugium Pump(s) 28w
Heaters 400w
Lighting 312w
Total: 925w

after proposed lighting upgrade
Total: 1375w

$120 a month? :confused2: Ok...at this point wives are officially not allowed to view this thread. LOL

I actually think you are only about half that Sam. Many of those don't run all day.

I figure my system costs me around $100 per month...

3 X 250W HQI on magnetic ballast (= closer to 350W each)
~300 W T5
420W of pumps
90W skimmer
Heaters
Chiller
Power heads
