1mbrews8 Tank Build thread - 180g with basement sump, frag, etc..

I think the wahoo will be plenty ! I don't know of any cons besides ............................................... uh no, none that I can think of. IMO the system is safer than a durso or any of the other systems since none of them have an emergency drain in the equation. It obviously is not for any tank that can't have 3 drains but it works well. As with any system it does have a limit of gph so just do trial runs and get it adjusted and make sure to simulate one of the drains being clogged as well as a siphon break on the one.

Sounds great. The plus to running the return over the back is you can have more multiple points of random flow.

Frag Tank

4'x2'x12" Spilt in half. One side for sps (with closed loop) and the other for lps and softies.

I still need to drill the tank and polish edges a bit.

Finally had a chance to pick up the wahoo and frag tank from
Chris today. He had to replace the bottom of the tank cus he broke it ;o) so its not as pretty, but I think it will do the job.

My mag 18 that is my return pump now, and will be the frag sps side closed loop, went out... So if anyone has one, lmk! Thanks
Mike

k. got another mag 18 as back up, got a rubbermaid 100g for sump, got 2 lumenarc minis and mogul sockets and all for the frag tank, got the frag tank stand done and painted except for drain holes, and have the basic frame for the canopy...

i am thinking the galaxy selectawatt ballasts for the frag tank in case i want to go higher than the 250w max i am thinking... gotta get glass shields for the lumenarcs i think.. pics tonight!!

mike

You only need glass shields when running DE bulbs. But if your lights are close to the water in might not be a bad idea.

ok, well they are se but the tank is 12" high so i was unsure on how high off the water to hang them.
I guess it might depend on what watt bulb/ballast i use?? i also dont want the reflectors and sockets to get wet and rust.....

Ive got my 250 about 8pm off the water and have not problem with rust FWIW.

thanks!

here is a pic of start of canopy. anyone got any thoughts? i plan on the front/top lifting up to have access to lights, feeding, etc. i will be putting my t-5s back in about 5" from water top. but i made the canopy bigger in case i ever want mh...

here is the start of the frag system. got the tank in place to mark holes...

[I]ok, i think i asked this before, but now i am going with a diff tank so want grims, etc opinion..</em>

[I]it is a 6' x 2' x 2' 180g tank. dual back megaoverflows set like 6" away from the sides. i want sps, lps, etc...</em>

[I]i have 2 ic660s with each a 4 48" bulb setup with reflectors now over my 150g.</em>

[I]it is pretty cramped and i have them overlapped/staggered to cover the sides (so down the middle, the lights/reflectors are basically touching, but the ends alternate sides sticking out).</em>

[I]will 8bulbs be enough light for the 180g? what bulbs to get? will the staggering mess anything up? thanks</em>
[I]mike</em>

I'd do 8 80 watt lamps which are 60". Don't mess with staggering them, they will light a 6 foot tank pretty well, You just can't keep high light critters in the last 6 or 8 inches on each side.

[I]thanks for the reply! so i wouldn't be able to drive those with the 660s right?</em>
[I]mike</em>

Sure. Each 660 can drive 3 of the 80n watt lamps, the 430 can drive 2 so 2 660's and 1 430 for the two dusk/dawn lamps.

[I]thanks again for the replys!</em>
[I]so if my 660s are set up now for 4 t5 ho 54w bulbs, do i have to get a new harness or just cut/leave one "group" unconnected?</em>
[I]will i still be able to grow sps as well (in the middle/top of the tank)?</em>
[I]would i still try to use the 8 bulb combo you sent originally for the other tank?</em>
[I]thanks!</em>
[I]mike</em>

I don't remember the exact diagram for 3 lamps but it will be on Ice Cap's web site. You can use the same harness although you might have to extend some wires. Just make good solid connections and it wont be any big deal.

8 lamp mix will be fine but you might have to substitute KZ Fiji Purple for a UVL Actinic White if I suggested those, UVL doesn't make 80 watt lamps

so i guess i can rewire the ic660 that i have now pretty easy it seems..

* does everyone agree that it would be better to go with the -6" off the edges (tank 72", 80w bulbs 60") rather than stagger the 48" 54w bulbs?

*what about using another 660 (so 3 total) to run the other 2 (or even 3) bulbs instead of the ic430?

thanks!

Got the stand inside sealed more and painted black
back of frag tanks and main tank painted black
cleaned up both
got holes for drains drilled in frag tank stand
got a 250w ic ballast for sps side of frag tank (still need 175w, hint, hint..:o))
got a ton done on canopy. prob 60% done
talked to elec about new outlets, etc
talked to drywall guy to put up the drywall around where tanks, etc will go..
got 8 60" reflectors and bulbs for DT to use with ic 660s
started to reseal my 6 or 7g mini tank for my kid (who almost melted it..)

think thats it for the moment! will post pics tom hopefully!

finished 95% of moulding.. still have to put "squares" in the front to match up with # of doors on bottom part. any good ideas of what "cut"/"type" of wood piece to use?
