Well I think i'm going to go cry myself to sleep. Just found AEFW and red bugs. I diligantly dipped every coral I got regardless of who it was from. You'd be amazed how many pieces out there have red bugs. I became like a super hero with lazer eyes and dipped extra hard till I saw them all dead before putting the frag in my tank. I guess some eggs or something weren't killed by the dip :(

The AEFW came out of left field and floored me. Was trying to figure out why I was having some problems with certain corals when I noticed the bite marks. It's like red bugs, once you see them, there's no mistaking.

So I tried dipping one of my corals in revive and within 2 minutes I had 2 large flatworms floating. Dipped another and found 3+ more and a batch of eggs I scraped off. Dipped 3 more frags and didn't see any flatworms, but did find a batch of red bugs.

I'm so very bummed. The red bugs I guess I can get with interceptor if I can find some on the market. Not sure if it kills the eggs or if I have to do multiple treatments. Atleast I only have 3 trochus snails, 2 hermits, and a fleet of stomatella snails that may get nuked.

Not sure what to do about AEFW, i'll have to research. any suggestions are very welcome.

:(

Why not set up a small QT to put the snails and hermits in? Just fish out the ones you can find, at least you what nuke them all if you do have to treat the whole tank.

Red bugs are really not a big deal. AEFW are another story. Red bugs are believed to be live bearers so one treatment will suffice.

I only have 2 acro's physically attached and one I broke loose and dipped when I saw the bite marks. The other has started to encrust but doesn't show any bite marks that I can see. Of course it's white so seeing them would be tougher.

I think I counted about 25 sps frags in the tank. 21 of which I'm pretty sure are acro.
Does cyphastrea count as red bug/flat worm host?

Has anyone had any luck with wrasses in combatting flat worms?

oh, and fwiw, i dipped in revive with a 1 quart container and 1 capfull of revive and I could shake the flatworms off at about the 2 minute mark. Dipped for 4 minutes to be safe.

When I was dealing with them, I used potassium permanganate as a dip and a pig dewormer as an intank treatment.

I've never done a FW dip on an acro- pretty stressful, I hear.

The pig dewormer is a great dip for new corals coming in. If you get the right dose, it paralyzes the worms, killing them.

How many times did you dip/treat the whole tank? Did you do the every 5 days for 3 or so times or just once? did it get everything?

while I believe you maybe correct on live bearers, a number of years ago I did one treatment (per Dave's instructions), a few months later red bugs. Then I did another single treatment, red bugs again. I did a double treatment, haven't seen one since.....

Yes I also did a single treatment for red bugs and a short time later they were back. Completed 2 treatments 1 week apart and I have been clean of them since.

I'm highly considering the melanurus wrasse. Though i'm pretty sure it'll cull my stomatella population as well. And from what I read, possibly hermits, shrimps, and the occaisional nassarius. Which means i'll probably need to figure out a CUC solution also lol.

Anyone ever heard of peppermint shrimps eating flatworms? I've got a few aptaisia i'd like to nuke also.

So sorry, its depressing when you follow all the rules and still get pests!
If your interested in the peppermint shrimps for the Aptaisia or other, for fun I've got a 12 JBJ set up with peppermint shrimp I trained to eat Aptaisia. If you would like some let me know how many and I will purchase them, let my others train them and you can pick them up in a few days for whatever my cost was for buying them. Caution, they may eat Zoa's or other corals when your Aptaisia is gone. Some do especially when they are not feed enough.
I will do this for anyone interested as well, just PM me please. I'm bad about checking subscriptions!

I have a whole pack of interceptor if you need some. I think their the ones for big dogs, so 500mg I think.
