I'm late to the game here... but to prevent recurrence...
I wouldn't use the canister for biological filtration. For circulation only and short-term water polishing (ie with carbon) but don't leave carbon in there for more than a few days at a time. Canisters are famous for promoting nitrates.
API test kits - I believe that everyone covered that already but to be specific: THEY ARE CRAP. We spend thousands of dollars on our tanks - don't cheap out on crappy test kits.
Post all known parameters including temperature and specific gravity.
What kind of lighting do you use? That first pic looks awfully yellow to me, that could be part of the problem too.
