We are going to Greece later this month, and wondered if the diving was worth it.

If there is water..it's worth diving.....:)

never been there, I am sure someone out there has though. I would be bringing my gear.!!

well ive never dove in the med with scuba gear but I am from Lebanon and you can snorkel there and see alot of great fish with super clear water (well before the war last year now super polluted :( )

I island hopped in Greece for 3 weeks in October of 2002. Being a diver myself, I never saw a diving shop on those islands. The Aegean sea is quite cold and turbulant, and there are many protected underwater archaeological sites. I think all these contributed to the limited diving possibilities. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed the breathtaking scenaries there. I would never forget the starry sky over the Aegean sea. If you are a party animal, you will probably also enjoy the numerous nude beaches and incredible night life on those islands.

We are going to Santorini - there are 4 dive shops, but the pics of the diving look fair at best. Either they are not good photographers, or there is limited life...but some cool wrecks, etc.

Maybe because I went at the shoulder season and the dive shops had closed by October. But I swam and snorkled and didn't see any reef there. I would assume wreck diving should be good considering Aegean Sea's long history. Aegean Sea is the least polluted sea on planet earth (I read it in Lonely Planet) and the sea water is crystal clear and stunningly blue. But somehow shallow water reef activities are next to non existent, maybe because of lower temp than tropical seas?

I have swam in the Mediterranean (off the coast of italy). I know there are a lot of sharks in that sea, and the visibility is great.

I've dove off Santorini-- waters cold as hell!!! But... it is completely different diving. I saw more octopus on that dive than i've ever seen on all my previous dives combined. The sea life is all very different and isnt as coral based, more grasses and different fish. It was alot of fun and worth it for one dive, but I got the feel for the place after just one dive. And be prepared to read your SPG in BAR rather than PSI.....

Don't tell Wanda you are going there...She has been begging me for the last year to go there..... Maybe next year I can take her..

Any special reason for Santorini? Wanda's been researching that area, she is very spirtiual and that place is said to be the lost city of Atlantis. or something like that.

Anyway let us know how it goes...

Yea - the lost city of Atlantis. Santorini was a bigger island before a big volcanic explosion, and may have been the site of the original myth.

The main reason for the trip is that I turn 50 on Thursday, and we have accumulated 660,000 points on American Express that we are going to burn through before the airlines make it even harder to use. Our two older kids are going to watch our two younger kids for a week as their birthday present to me. If all works out, the flights and hotels will all be covered by the points. We go to Santorini, then Athens for a day, then Prague for a few days for a total of one week. I have never been to either place. I figure I get a vacation like this every 50 years.

Santorini is very romantic (but very expensive). One of Zack's best friends in college lives there and suggested it. We will scope it out for you. It appears pretty relaxing and low key. Not much other than drinking Greek wine and watching the sunset over the Aegean Sea.

Margi really is a wiz at finding these places - amazing hotels, airfares, etc. She is a female version of Clark Howard. She literally is already packed and we don't leave until the 19th. I just have to show up and try not to complain about all the money I am spending.

I am looking for the Clark Howard version of the trip as well....You can be my wingman on this one.....I need to give her a trip that she really wants and that is the trip....

Collect brochures and **** for us if ya can remember...
