I know eels aren't really concidered "reef safe" or "invert safe" with a few exceptions. And, that also depends on keeping them fed and they're individual personalities. I was researching/looking at several different eels to maybe add to a 60" 120g and was wondering if anyone had any experiences with eels in a reef they'd like to share.

Futureinterest, "Jin" used ot have an eel in his beautiful reef. No for sure what type though.

Doesnt he just have the dwarf goldens?

Jin, twist of lime and James have or had golden dwarf moray eels. And actually James has a pair. Very cool creatures. And they don't get to hard.

golden morays was one of the eels I was looking at. I've been reading that they Do eat fish but their mouths don't get very big so they can't much on an avg. aquarium fish.

To add to the subject I have 2 eels. One is a 3 foot moray that I got from another member he kept it with cleaner shrimp and they even used to clean his mouth etc. I also have a bright yellow eel which I'm told is a yellow tail moray and both eat from my hand etc. Now I don't have corals I only have FOWLR. They mostly hang out in their caves etc until they get hungry. We'll see how they like what I do with the rockwork. You can also take a piece of pvc and cut it in half and place it under the sand and along your glass to give them a home. It will keep them visible and yet comfortable. I have seen this done before and am planning to put it in place in my next system.

I love the pvc idea. That was one of my hang ups was them staying hidden most of the time. That solves that problem. Excellent idea!!

Jin's eel is in fact a golden dwarf moray.

We have kept several GDM's in reef as well.

Bigger eels make me nervous.

GDM's are pricey though if you can find em.

I have a 3' zebra moray in mine for over 4 years. He hasn't bothered any fish and I have only fed him frozen foods. I haven't tried keeping shrimp in there with him, but would love to try one day. I had him when the tank was fish only, and didn't have the heart to get rid of him when the tank was converted to a reef.

get an engineer goby, looks like an eel but wont bother anything and wont crap up the tank from big food/poops

I have a golden dwarf in my reef. Does not bother anything and has being doing well.

I have a pair of gdm eels in my solana. Hasn't touch my shrimps .... yet. But the only drawback is I see their heads once every bluemoon. But really easy creature to take care of, eats whatver wet food u toss in.

One of my favorite eels. I recall the first time I stepped foot into Warehouse aquarium, they had a female in one of those black troughs across from the above ground pool. It would follow me in any direction I stepped with all those razor sharp teeth showing. She was ready mess me up given the chance.

I got my 8" from Warehouse. keep them well fed, and they can be kept with others.
