Leaving to go out of town for a couple of months and I'd like to be able to dial in the amount of food hitting the aquarium. Anyone use one of these? The Eheim appears to be the nicest just based on reviews online.

also, do any work with the neptune apex? And if they don't, would it be a good idea to sync the clocks on the two and have all pumps turn off prior to feeding and then back on afterwards?

Thanks for any ideas!

eheim 3581 is pretty decent. Holds a ton of food, pellets/flake. You can set the time for up to 4 feedings a day, can control how much it dumps in. I use them on my freshwater tanks, easily holds several weeks worth of food.

I was going to say, I've been looking into it myself and the 3581 seems to be everyone's fave.

I have one and just grabbed it off the shelf to check it out. It runs off batteries and when you press the eheim button the bottom spins around lol, I dont know why I find this so funny but it was just the way it happend I guess. I havent ever checked it out since I aquired it.

I use the Eheim feed-aire type on one of my FW tanks and it works great.

I've always been skeptical about auto feeders. Will anybody be home that could manually feed for you? I'd make individual portions for the person watching your tank. I'd feel much more safe this way.

+1

ill be buying one soon, prob the eheim as some of us travel and dont have anyone so for my case. The auto feeder will be providing mon thru thurs...

I've been toying with figuring out a way to train my fish to go to the food when I'm not home. When i am home and I walk up to the tank the fish all run for the surface in front of me (I'm sure everyone's fish do this). I am thinking I could rig up some sort of light that is timed to come on a min before the food drops to get the attention of the fish and then go off a min afterwards... maybe that way they'd get wise to the idea that if the light is on... hang out for some comida? I dont want a feeder to just drop food in and have it go unnoticed to the sand.

I bought an Eheim and it has worked flawlessly. The only issue I can see would be if a person had a small tank AND used small pellets. A pretty good bit of those can pass through the gate on the smallest setting it has.

It helps to put some tape on the gate so it doesn't move. Also, you can cover half the opening with tape, which will reduce the amount that comes out if you want to feed small pellets multiple times per day.

I've got an Eheim that I use all the time, not just when I'm away, to feed spectrum pellets. That way the feeding isn't radically "different" when I'm gone. When I'm home, I drop a cube of frozen in at least once a day, but that's a bonus.

I'm also working on using the Apex, a peristaltic pump, and a wine bottle chiller to automatically feed liquid food throughout the day. I'll post something on that if it works out....

hey Ryan, ill take care of the tank, but i aint stopping by to feed fish once a day!lol!i dont even feed my fish once a day,and they live with me!just messing with you.

It just so happens that the "deal of the day" today on marine depot is on an eheim fish feeder. I just bought one. $21.99!
It came to 28.98 shipped.

Eheim here too. I wouldnt time it to shut the return pump off and back on for unattended feedings, Id rather food go everywhere than risk a failure.
