I woke up this morning to my living room flooded with saltwater. A snail crawled over into my overflow and blocked the return to the sump. I'm not looking forward to my wife coming home for lunch I just put down brand-new laminate floors in the house she is going to be so mad

Yeah he still in there and i cant get him out

dude, put some eggcrate on top of that, or a strainer that twists in (they sell them at home depot)

Eggcrate is worth its weight in gold... or in this case saltwater.

Ouch, Man!!! Hate to hear that. How much water spilled?

I put one of these over my all inlet pipes (even the one inside my overflow u-tube after I re-made it from PVC): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002DVTF6E/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1">Amazon.com: Lifegard Aquatics 3/4-Inch Threaded Suction/Overflow Strainer: Pet Supplies</a>

Best of luck!!!

Aaaahhhh. I see what you are dealing with...

Can you do the eggcrate thing over the top of it, and possibly plumb in a second drain for emergencies like the one you just had?

How much water is in the exit part of your sump? I have mine set up to where the return pump section of my sump will be close to dry before the tank will overflow. Probably be nice to have a top off switch in your tank too. When the water reaches a certain level, the return pump will shut off. This may save your pump from running dry as well...

BTW: I know you're mad at that snail right about now. Send it to me. I have a Mantis shrimp that'll teach it a lesson about clogging the drains. LOL!!!

My stupidity is not the snail's fault not mad at him. But next time I build a tank it will have external overflows and they will be much bigger As for the second drain it's already in there it just couldn't handle the flow rate but I turned my return pump bake down

No it's a DIY I took an old 55 gallon tank I got off the side of the road and cut it up and made it into an overflow. It's not the prettiest thing in the world but it gets the job done. I just cut a Black clipboard And put it over the over flow but I think I will order some of that stuff from glass holes it looks like it will work best.

Try the Kobe Bryant method, and have a big ring waiting on her when she gets home...

Don't feel bad. My GF isn't the biggest fan of the tanks either...
