Not sure what waste snails produce if it has phosphates, nitrates, etc. I do think algae is a lot like fat stores. They probably suck up whatever is in the water column while they are growing and then as they die off or are consumed the waste releases those chemicals and such back into the water column. Not a big deal unless it is a mass effect like mine. Seems to make the most sense to me.
