I wouldn't worry too much about the "bugs". I still believe they are just pods. You're fish get a free meal or two.
Maybe it's time to get that Mandarin you've been wanting.

I would get a new test kit, or take water to lfs to double check your ph. If it is that high, you need to fix that.
