I have the MM LED fixtures but not too happy with them. This is very interesting to me and wanted to share it.

Look pretty nice to me reef fixture seems to have a nice spectrum. 3yr warranty and made in USA

Well I found the link on ReefBuilders blog. They wouldn't have had an article about them if they werent legitimate. If you havent checked this out, its really good.

I've been thinking of building a light for a pico, only 7" wide. Hadn't come up with a plan yet. I just called them to see if they can/would build one shorter than 12". They said didn't see why not but didn't have the power supply for one that small, said they shouldn't be hard to get though. Think I'll give it a try if they can do it!

Guys,
Take this advice or leave it, but I would never buy an LED light I had not seen first hand, or at the very least a decently long video of it, preferably the former.

I feel the same way. But I'm a pretty electrically challenged, so DIY is iffy for me. Few options for a tank that small. And some one has to be first to try everything. They are not that expensive so not to big a risk. They haven't said they would make it yet either.

You could buy a solder less kit from rapidled.com. they will even let you tune the colors to your liking. Heat sinks are predrilled. All you have to do is read the instructions. So easy a 5 year old could do it.

I looked into that. Your right I think I could do it. I never cared for the light being as big as the tank, like they are often with picos. First choice was a small neat clean light, Next best would be to have it all included in a small canopy, maybe 3" think. Most DIY drivers including the ones Rapid uses are all as long as my tank 7", So hard to see it all fitting. A full spectrum dimmable Par38 bulb would also work but by the time you get some kind of rig to hold it over the tank it also gets visually pretty big. The Par38 is my fallback plan though.

You could remote the driver by extending the wires and put it under the tank. They have 5watt chips with single heatsinks. You might have to get creative on the mounting though.

I have seen some very nice small DIY rigs. But when I read about the electrical specs it's Greek to me. I would try it & probably drive some people nuts with questions but if I can find a off the self unit I like I'd go for it.

Appreciate the thought though.

Well they (Randall) has been working with me! He had said they didn't really do custom fixtures when I ask if they offered fixtures shorter than 12". I said that is a real shame because there are a lot of people making small tanks & looking for a nice small light for them. He called back & said he'd make me a couple prototypes & see how it went.

I have the first of the two types he made, two little 6" fixtures (work as one unit) with 6 LEDS each. He is about to send me two different spectrum 7 1/2" fixtures with 9 LEDs in each. They are multi (4 channel) units. I could not be happier!!! They are very small & nice looking too.

Here is a link to my build thread that has pix of the first two on it. When I get pix of the 7 1/2" units I'll post them on here on ARC. http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2249280">http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2249280</a>

Like I said earlier, I'm not much of a DIY guy when it comes to electronics so this is perfect for me. I bit it will be for many others as well!
