Hey guys I kno a lot of you out there are running refugiums, but for the few out there who are running canisters what's your media? Im running a fuval 405 on a 55gal
Tray#1 fluval ceramic noodles
Tray#2 fluval bio max
Tray#3 chemipure elite
Tray#4. fluval bio foam
my problem is that I'm having small nitrate spikes
Any suggestions other than to get a refugium would be appreciated

Edit:

Canister filters almost always lead to excessive nitrates in reef tanks. Get a refugium. :)

Ok but is there anything I can do until I get one?

Yea pull all the stuff out of the canister as that's likely causing the nitrates, and put the following in the trays.... carbon, phosguard, and matrix

You could use the nitrate pads in one of the trays but I would run matrix in the two larger trays

Ok thanks for the info

yup using matrix or denitrate (same things just diffrent sizes) will help with the nitrate problems but also regular cleaning of the foam pads will help tremendously and when i say regular i mean at least once a week if not more.
