CFL and MH bulbs are hazardous waste

I have several metal halide and long compact florescent lightbulbs to dispose of. They all contain mercury which is considered hazardous waste. Home Depot only takes the small CFL twist bulbs, not our long aquarium ones.

Has anyone recycled theirs somewhere in Atlanta (preferably for free)?

Apparently some IKEA stores will recycle. I am going there (for the first time) this Saturday so I will post back what I learn. The Roswell Recycling Center does not take the bulbs, but referred me to Southeast Recycling Technologies (Kennesaw) who charges a fee.

Just trying to be a good world citizen.

Thanks,

Mark

While I can't speak the specifics of what they recycle I know they recycle Plastic Bags, Batteries and Flourescent bulbs... I'd call them first, (404) 745-4532. Especially if you have no other reason to be at Ikea on a Saturday afternoon.

Speaking from someone who frequents Ikea... I love the place, but if you go on a weekend day/afternoon it's stressful to be in that store and even in the parking garage, laughs. Weekday days and evenings are the absolute best so you can enjoy the experience of being at an ikea and actually getting service if you need it. Possibly a weekend evening as well. But on a Sat/Sun day, it's so crowded it's unbelieveable, especially right now while they remodel the entire store.

If you do go, I hope you're able to find someone to help you our relatively easily and that it's not too big of a madhouse. But honestly, I'd call first if you have no other real reasons to be there, lol.

Tagging along - I have a huge box of old CF lamps and others. I used to have a customer who picked them up a few at a time for recycling (he had access to a free disposal) but I haven't seen him in a while and they are stacking up.

If I can't safely unload them for free, I'll pay to do it but I will have to start charging a disposal fee myself - everybody plays, "hot potato" with their old lamps.
