where is the best place in a tank to put a chalice coral?

Lower part of tank, preferably on the sandbed, but not touching the sandbed--maybe epoxy to a small rock or plug. I've found that some chalices even like full or partial shade. My Peacock hates light, and threatens to lose all color when under the halides. I'd say 40% like full shade, 40% like partial shade, 10% like sandbed light, and the last 10% actually like higher light. My Pink boobies, Miami Hurricane, and Tyree Red to great halfway up under direct halide light.

This question is also very dependent on the power of your lights, but I think, generally speaking, what I said is true.

well its a hollywood stunner and i am running a 150 mh with 2x actinic t5 (18") on a 20g tank.

I'd try a few different spots and see which one seems to work the best. I picked up a nice watermelon frag a little while ago and I placed it lower in the tank, partially shaded. I thought i could get better color out of it so i tried some different spots. It ended up getting the best color perched on a small shelf 1/2 way up the tank and in full light. The tank is a standard 55 with 2x250mh and led actinic supplements. So try a few spots, watch it and see which spot it likes. Good luck with it,

It will grow about anywhere. Have you seen the monster one I have?

I started it as a thumbnail sized frag under stock PC in an Aquapod. Now it takes up about 1/4 of my prop tank under 2 x 400W MH.

Be aware it has long sweeper tentacles so watch who is downstream from it. Mine "behaves" but I have seen it in attack mode.

There's a chalice called Pink Boobies? That's ridiculous. I'd google it to see what it looks like, but I'd be afraid of what came up.

Sad, isn't it? I guess it's a good match with Gorilla Nipple Zoas

"Designer" names... ridiculous.

JMO of course...

I didn't know that my monster chalice was a "Hollywood Stunner" until somebody told me about 2 years ago. I've had it for 6 years. All this time I thought I had an Echinopora sp.

I completely agree, Jenn. I think the names can make it easier if you're looking for a particular species with specific coloration, but the majority of the names are just plain stupid.

Few things in the hobby cause as much dissonance as the coral naming thing. Most old-time hobbyists hate it, most newcomers like it. I personally like it because if I see a particular chalice or zoa online or elsewhere and like it's characteristics, it's neat to be able to find the exact strain by name.

Also, "Pink boobies," was a joke name given to a really nice chalice in a sort of backlash against the naming craze; ironically, it stuck.

I think most people who are "collectors" like naming, while those who are fish people or prefer softies or a lively, full reef full of life don't like the names. Comes down to how "into" the coral you are IMO.

Sorry to get off track.

For us old-schoolers, the scientific name is universal. Unfortunately, common names vary and one creature can have several common names, OR one common name can be used to describe several different creatures.

Blue tang, for example. In the Caribbean it's used to describe the Atlantic Blue Tang, or Acanthurus coeruleus. In many other places, it's the Pacific/Regal/Hippo tang, or Paracanthurus hepatus. Two very different species.

Just because somebody gives something a designer name, doesn't mean it's identical to somebody's similar thing with the same designer name. I get stuff in here all the time - I could call it whatever I want. Doesn't mean it's "authentic" because there really isn't any definition of authentic.

IMO, a fancy name just serves to drive the price up. If it's unusual, the market will dictate what a seller can get for it. Names just add more to the retail cost.

JMHO of course...

thanks for the info on the sweeper tentacle. i wasnt watching who was down stream but i just moved 3 frags.

I cant pronounce the proper names anyway so I like the designer names myself...

I agree with placement (original topic).. mine's under 250W Radiums and it grows everywhere I put it... (it's ALWAYS been in full light though.. I haven't put it in partial shade.. )

right now, my RBTA has actually found sanctuary under it.. popping out of one side..

The PB chalice is pretty awesome. AKA Vivid Echino. This pic (not mine) is a bit blue, but pretty representative. Now back to your previously scheduled topic.:D

If that's a Pink Boobie, somebody seriously needs a mammogram... and perhaps some chemo...

Just sayin'....
