I'll play :)

It's not rare, it's not expensive. It's just big. Well, bigger than big...

First pic taken 8/17/2012 (It's bigger now)

My son took this pic - it's on our website home page.

This one was taken a year ago this week, Jan 27/2012. Again, it's probably 1/3 larger now, but gives you some perspective.

I've had it somewhere between 7 and 8 years, it was a frag the size of my thumbnail when I got it, and at the time, Hollywood Stunners were going for about $100 for a frag that size. We've pruned off so much over the years it isn't funny. Grows like a weed.

We're working on growing out a blue variant that I've had for a couple of years now, but we fragged some of it. It's starting to grow but it will take a while to get as big as its cousin. :D

Heh if it was a super-expensive one, I could retire!

There's the catch... by the time one of those insanely expensive ones grows out, so has everyone else's and the law of supply and demand applies.

Seems like the more colourful/rare, the slower it grows. We have a few "named" ones we got as frags, and a few unnamed ones (well, we don't know their "names" - I'm not into that really), but they grow slower than molasses in January.

Wow, biggest chalice I have ever seen - that thing is a monster. Too bad you're right about the supply/demand or you could change the name of it to "Million Dollar Chalice".

We've sold our share of frags... but some have "come back" when people take down or re-do their tanks. I have some decent sized pieces in the shop, as well as lots of small bits.

Hard to "give the stuff away" now LOL!

This was the MM when I got it. Instead of trying to find larger and larger frag discs to stack it on, I use a hole saw kit on a thin sheet of acrylic for larger discs. It's a lot easier than looking for monster sized ceramic frag discs. The original frag was on a standard little round plug. I just drill a hole in the center of the acrylic disc to be able to slip it on and off the plug's shaft. When I need a larger disc size, I slip off the old one and slip on a new larger one. Since the acrylic is smooth, the chalice does not "stick" to it.

I've heard a smooth surfaces makes them grow faster too. can you tell a difference?

Nothing special, just one of my favorites in the tank.

Appears flow is a larger factor to rate of growth for mine. They produce very thick skeletons when in higher currents. Same goes for everything in my tank though. When I dial back the flow for a few weeks everything looks like it's having a growth spurt. It's really not the case. Things just switch their growth pattern.
High current = Skeletal circumference and density increase (Tabling growth pattern in the case of some SPS)
Low current = Outward growth and expansion increase (Branching growth pattern in the case of some SPS)

I prefer my chalice to have "slow growth" where the skeletons are very thick. Seems the colors are richer and more intense than a chalice in a low current/fast outward growth pattern. Maybe because the pigmented tissue is actually thicker?

I keep the tank at higher than usual flow rates 75% of the time then dial it back to normal flows the other 25%.

Some of mine..... They are much brighter in person.

I pucked up these two at last year's frag swap. I've never known their names but I like them just the same.

Nice. I think I saw one of those in its infancy at the store. Tried to buy it and was told it was already sold.
