Chapter 1: IM Nuvo40

I ordered some chaeto from them and it died in a week , got some from a member and it did great ...till I killed it , about 6 months . I believe their chaeto is grown with fertilizer vs natural tank waste and it has problems adapting to some systems .
My LED light for the reactor was supposed to be delivered today...but it hasn't come yet unless the UPS guy threw it on the roof.
I just checked the reactor and chaeto is still green and obo is still red. So I assume they are still alive.

Kind of a bummer - I lost my cleaner shrimp 2 days ago and couldnt figure out why.
Today I dipped some zoas in Bayer and a few hours later noticed that my fire shrimp was acting weird. The correlation dawned on me about bayer & shrimp and after a bit of research I've pretty much confirmed that I won't be using any more Bayer to dip corals.
As far as the fire shrimp - I took him out and put him in a heated bucket and he seems to be coming back around. Fingers crossed.
I've just completed a 50% water change and also changed out the carbon in my media reactor.

As far as the Bayer - I used 4oz of water with 10ml of bayer. Removed coral from frag plug. Soaked corals for 5 minutes. Shook. Shot with a turkey baster.
Then I soaked them in tank water for 5 minutes and shook them around.
Glued the coral onto a piece of rumble rock and placed it in the tank.

I think whatever residual Bayer that was left on the corals was enough to effect the shrimp.

As a follow up - I think it ended up just being coincidence on the death of the cleaner shrimp.
The fire shrimp that was acting funny actually ended up molting and is fine now.
I have since replaced the original cleaner shrimp with a larger one and it is doing fine. And I have continued to dip corals in Bayer with no other losses. I think the original cleaner was smaller and may not have acclimated well.

Also as a side note - a rock fell and broke off about a quarter of one of my purple hammers heads. I tried glueing it back to the original head but that didn’t work so I ended up glueing it to a frag plug. Surprisingly, it seems to be doing well (bottom right)

Warm weather = worked on the pond today.
Poor my koi...they've been largely ignored by yours truly since I started reefing

Sorry about your mom.
There's nothing better than sitting on the ledge with your legs in the pond and a beer in hand at the end of the day.

Wow. Those are beautiful. My mom loved Kois. She passed away 6 years ago from pancreatic cancer. I got a Koi tattoo in remembrance of her.
I'm sorry for the loss of your mom, mine passed away July 2017 and it's still difficult. I'm considering a cardinal tattoo. Both of my parents loved cardinals.

Koi are one of the reasons I got into this hobby. Haha. When I was the GM of Front Page News in Midtown we had this amazing water fountain with five large koi in it. When I first started working there the water was so green and gross. After some research and learning about the biological cycle I dumped some dirt in the filter and two days later the water was crystal clear. I wound up installing these amazing color changing LEDs in the water. It was a masterpiece. 20ft tall. Just amazing. When I left there and went back to running The Nook I missed taking care of those fish. So here we are. Haha. I don’t have an outside area to house a koi pond. But one day soon enough I will :)
