Chapter 3: 150g SCA Tank

Caught junior this morning and didn’t get distracted taking him out. Transferred him to his old stomping grounds in the IM40.

As expected the larger yellow has come out and is swimming around. Very thin and it declining health but eating well. I’ll try to put some weight back on him.

I’ve been slowly introducing lps into the tank. I have to do it at night otherwise the hippo pulls them out and uses them as a soccer ball.

Tanks cloudy because I cannot keep my hands out of it

I’ve also been using kalk water in the ato to keep the alk up. I mix it in a separate bucket, wait a day and only pour the clear liquid into the reservoir.

All the fish are fat. The blonde naso is growing fast. It’s a beautiful fish.

Are hippos reef safe? I have hammer polyps floating around the tank bc he's been nipping at them.
He also likes to move new frags around and use them as a soccer ball. Curiously, he pulls them out and drags them to the rear corner of the tank.

Blonde Naso is growing fast...he is already almost the size of the yellow fox and will likely eclipse the hippo in 3 months

Usually Hippos are reef safe, but, I guess their is always the exception. Are you sure it is eating corals and not the algae on them?

It is a LT Tang that is usually suspect for being reef safe.

He's not eating the coral - he's just nipping at them which causes polyps for fly off.
Old boy hazes every new thing that goes into the tank for about a day and then leaves them alone be it fish or corals...he's just a jackas$ I guess, lol. Asserting his dominance....or something

@Rainblood that Elegance is awesome. How do you feed him? Spot feed, broadcast?? Mysis, Roids? Those ALK readings seem low to me, or maybe me keeping mine at what I thought was recommended 8.5 to 9 is to high ???

I think anywhere between 7-9 is ok. I’ve been using .5 teaspoon kalk per gallon in the ato to see where it “stabilizes”. Right now it’s hovering around 145 so I think thats good.
I've been on the fence about buying a apex/trident but man, its expensive plus it sounds like they are pretty cheaply built...but there's really no good alternatives out there. As soon as I buy one, something a million times better and a little cheaper will come out, lol...thats how my luck usually runs

The elegance is doing good. I have an small orange tipped elegance in the 40g. It was sold to me as an orange but really looks gold. But I’m not sure you can keep them together.
I feed reef roids to be safe. Early on I had a wild gold tip elegance and I think I killed it by feeding it small pieces of shrimp. So these 2 I just feed roids and they’re still kicking
I think you really just need to get one thats been aquacultured and not ripped out of the ocean and you should be ok.

So if I had to rank the dumb shit I've done so far and the phases that I've regrettably gone through with really nothing to show for it...

1. My torch phase - I've burned through many expensive torches (some my fault, some just the nature of torches)
2. Amazeballs goni - dumb, dumb, dumb, it was a tiny frag and didn't last long
3. Clams - No comment. Croceas, Maximas even derasa. All died after about 6-9 months...I have no idea why they died. I currently only have one left and its the blue squammy.
4. And now
