Just read a thread on another forum where a reefer lost all his SPS to a failed heater, probably thousands of dollars worth. His was not stuck on as usually happens, but it stopped heating. Don't hear that one too often. Made me check mine, particularly with the cooler temps we are seeing now.

good advice I have been in the hobby for only a year and have had 3 heaters fail. what is the brand of choice for aquarium (saltwater) heaters?

You get so used to them being on that I don't check mine too often. There are actually inexpensive LCD digital thermometers that will give an audible beep is the tank temp goes outside a User set high and low point. Might not be a bad thing to have, especially if you don't use a Controller.

Dave where could I get one of these??

I lost my first 7 gallon nano of 3 years to a heater. I never used my heater then my wife noticed it wasnt plugged in one day. thre only thing that lived was pair of true percs.

Rainbow Lifegard makes them too. ;) Time/Temp alert.

A good reminder, David. Faulty heaters have caused so many problems for so many folks.

I just chcked mine the other day with the temp drop. I have two heaters but one is just a back up.... set a few degrees lower than the main heater....

now that seems like a good idea

I have gotten in the habit of checking my temps when I hit the feed button on my reefkeeper I also run two smaller heaters for some redundancy.
