Chris' Cancer Causing Construction

Welcome back and best of luck to you. Thoughts and prayers with you and your family in this difficult time.

Chris, it's not charity man. Most of us have been helped out when our tanks crashed, when money gets tight, or in a number of unique situation. We're just paying it forward man! You're one of us man!

I read this yesterday and really wanted to reply but just didn’t have the time. Josh is right; it’s not charity...We all do things for different reasons. Sometimes it’s just to lend a helping hand and sometimes it giving back because once upon a time someone did something nice and unselfish for you. I remember reading a post sometime in February started by a guy setting up a reef tank and was in need of some test kits. I had extra test kits not being used so I made arrangements to send them his way. I have seen this guy offer help, freebies and "give back" on a regular basis, even in this thread. It’s really good to see and know you’re part of a great community.

Chris, I would also like to help out, if you need any help setting up the tank or filtration please keep me in mind. I would also like to share some corals to seed your tank once it’s ready. Pleas know that my motivation is driven by your story reminding me of my friend Jeff. I know the joy and fulfillment this hobby can bring. Jeff was my best friend, we both loved watching NASCAR and going go cart racing. Whenever we watched a race at my house he would spend an hour just gazing at my tanks (I had 8 at that time). One day he told me that he was diagnosed with a non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and it was pretty advanced. Once the treatments started he couldn’t travel to my house for Race day. I spent time with him EVERY day. After a couple months he told me that he really missed looking at my reef tanks, they seemed to bring a sense calming and appreciation of life watching the corals grow. He really liked the plating Montiporias.

Well, the next day I showed up at his house with a tank and set it up. Over the next year and a half, he spent countless hours gazing into the depths of his underwater world. He would go in and out of treatment and always found time to spend with his tank. We spent endless hours talking about the hobby. My saddest day was when I had to go break down the tank, Jeff had passed but tearing down the tank made it real. At his funeral several family members came to me and thanked me for being his friend. They told me how the aquarium made a real impact. In the end, it wasn’t about charity…it was about doing the right thing for the right reason and making the world a little nicer even if only for a short time.

All I hope for with my offer is to help get you started so you can “be the one doing the helping”. That and maybe make a new friend…thanks.

I couldn't have said that any better myself. Being a survivor, it's not about the charity...it's not charity. It's self-worth. We aren't worth a grain of sand if we can't have compassion for our fellow man and help them out...even if they haven't asked for it. It starts many things in our lives, some of great value. When I was a kid, I helped my elderly neighbor rake leaves every fall. He never asked for my help and I never did it expecting anything in return. His kids were grown and gone plus he was my neighbor. He was also Postmaster. So one day he brought me some very special postage stamps (I still have them to this day) and that started a passion for me that has helped me build a stamp collection that has every US stamp minted from 1933 to present in MINT condition (I'm working on older years now). It may only be worth a few thousand dollars but to me it's priceless because everytime a new stamps goes in the album, I think of and thank Mr. Nugent for the "push start".

Exactly right. Most people in this world are good at heart. It just doesn't make for a compelling news story. Simply holding a door open for someone can make a difference in their day.

When we stand in front of our maker, is there anyone of us who wouldn't feel ashamed if he said "why didn't you take a minute (or hour or day) to help this person? That is the true meaning of loving your neighbor. And although we have never met, you are my neighbor just like all the others on this site.

This thread is about stepping up to help someone who didn't ask for or expect help. But, my guess is that it is helping many. It helping all of us to rediscover what is important in life and how wonderful life can be when we stick together.

'The true gift is in the giving'

It wasn't until I got sick that I knew what those words were really about. People around me, some I would not have guessed, came forward to do things for me. Watching them give their gifts, became powerful therapy for me :)

Chris, I wish you the best in your battle. I too am a testicular cancer survivor! I was 31 when diagnosed with Stage II and ended up having two surgeries and three rounds of chemo. Four years later and I'm a proud member of the "one nut army"!

I was a very cautious and timid person before but now I take life differently. I've bungee jumped of the Macau Tower, been sky diving over Atlanta, bought that motorcycle I always wanted (but could never justify!), and been a proud father and thankful husband to my beautiful wife and kids.

I think Tim McGraw said it best "And he said someday I hope you get the chance,To live like you were dyin'."

Ralph.....you win the internet for this week.

Sorry to show up late.....if you're in to zoas and lps, feel free to raid my frag tank for anything you want.

I have a 25g shallow with 2 holes in the back if you'd rather have that, your welcome to it.

Chris, choose a tank!!

If you would rather something offered by another member than a 40 breeder, there will be no offense taken. I'll simply find another way to contribute!
