Lately I have been thinking a lot about what to do with my 30 gallon rimless shallow tank. Well thanks to a friend I have discovered my latest addiction, which also happens to be the first recommendation for ideas for the 30 in my brainstorming the build thread- Clams

In the past 3 days- I have bought 3 clams. Ill take some pictures when the new additions get acclimated and open. One grade 1 blue maxima (small), one unique derasa (small), and one medium derasa. The small derasa was unlike any other one in the tank- it has a speckled pattern

I'm really excited about my clam garden. So for this thread post pictures of your clams and show me what I haven't seen!

Cool idea David!

It might be cool to add where you got the clams and what you do to take care of them. Food, flow, placement. I have been wanting a clam or two myself but don't really know much about them.

Wait the one I got today?
is yours from the same batch a maxima as well??

Okay- but if I get something wrong here somebody feel free to correct me
Clams are filter feeders. They like a little bit of ammonia and nitrate in the water. They also feed off of photosynthetic algae. If there is not enough light, a clam will starve over a couple months.

Maxima clams need to be on rock high up in the tank for light or on a piece of rubble in the sandbed to secure their foot. Derasa clams are okay in the sand bed. Mine are all in the sandbed temporarily, the maxima(s?) have rubble under them top secure their feet to.

I really don't think they are difficult to keep. I would imagine they need some calcium to grow.

Clam gardens are officially a must for me now though. Go buy one! (or five)

Uh huh

Edit: enough talk!

pics or it didn't happen!!

The derasa isn't fully open yet. I'll snap a couple when my phone turns back on though

Are larger clams less sensitive to light? If I turn off one light, the little ones snap close. I have to cut off all the lights at the same time to get a reaction from the derasa

COMON' PEOPLE! Post some pics!!

Edit: PS- Just ignore the aiptasia and wp-25 holder. lol.

yea that little one is most likely a maxima. i read an article a few years ago that detailed how to tell the diffrence between them and one of the defining features are the scutes and how many ridges the shell has on it. i cant remember which is which but you can tell that the shells are different on that one and the derasa

Yeah both of the maximas have the same shell. I just thought someone *cough*BARRY*cough* said it was a Derasa

I have an idea, If you sell me your mushrooms you'll have more room for clams! Seriously the clams look great!

Do you have to feef them daily if they are smaller like less than two inches? I thought I read thay somewhere.
Also what is a reasonable price for clams? Just to know what to look for.

I am jealous =) Put those clams each on a rock cradle to protect their foot. I miss my clams, protect their feet!

LOL Dave.

You'll get a mushroom. They aren't doing so well???? Only thing in the tank not doing well. I seriously doubt they will die though.

It's buried except right under each maxima, you cant see it, but they are sitting on their own pieces of rubble. I just stuck it down in the sand. I'll have to move them higher when they grab on. In the 30 shallow they can be a "garden" again

I think the Derasa can sit on the sand?

I saw the small blue maximas for $40 at 2 different stores

what store did you pick up the small blue maxima for $40?
