Controller Time

I guess I need to get with the times and pick up a controller. Looking at the RKL net and the Apex lite. I'm thinking just go with the Apex and don't look back and that seems like the consensus on the rest of the web. Customer service issues aside, does everybody think the Apex is still the better unit?

I do butt the reef angels are becoming very popular too

So am I......most the responses I've seen refer to their customer service. I'm more curious about the unit itself.

I ask because I did the same search when I was looking for a controller. I saw a lot of the opinions leaned toward the Apex but I never saw a real reason for that.

I used the RK lite for over a year with zero problems. Used it for lighting, heating, ATO, dosing pumps, etc.. and never had a glitch at all. I now upgraded to the Elite and expect the same.

Just not sure what the Apex can do that the RK cannot.

I don't have any of the three but this is what I have seen posted.

1. Support - No one beats Apex
2. Inclusions in base package - Apex
3. Available Add On - Apex, Reef Keeper
4. Scalability - Apex
5. Open Source - Reef Angle
6. Price Reef Angle

As I said, that is just from the comments I have seen and not from research.

Explain the inclusions in base package and the scalability of the Apex vs. the RK?

The Apex lite is $370 and it does come with the NET function but does not come with a pH probe. The RK Lite is $270 comes with a pH probe but does not come with the NET function. Both of these missing components can be added to either controller.

As I said I have done little research but what I have done showed me that if you compare the complete packages instead of the lite packages Apex offers more. I forget the specifics because although I want one it isn't in the budget.

Is anyone else puzzeled as to why the apex and the RK do not have built in WiFi??? Wonder when these companies will get with the time!

My guess is because the pricing is so close between them. While it may not add much cost, they would have to raise the sell price some and that could sway potential buys away.

Just arrived today....any bets on how late I'm up screwing with this thing?

I've had mine in place since February and I'm still dorking with it.
It's been working flawlessly. It just seems like about every other day I think "Hey, I bet it'll do this or that" and sure enough, I find that it will.

My latest quest is to have it control the water changes. :shades:

I'm not good with networking......so we're heading straight to rum.

Networking is not bad - as long as you're not on ATT 2Wire. I had mi Apex up and running on the network in about 15 minutes and will be happy to help if you need it. I STRONGLY suggest reading through the comprehensive manual on the site and follow the workflow to the letter - and it will simply work.

apex manual is about 100 pages

Main thing I do not like about Digital Aquatics: there is little/no customer service. The company just seems dead from an innovation/product development standpoint. The company has done zero Reefkeeper product development for the last 4 years or so. They came out with a salinity probe that was a complete failure, were supposed to correct it and replace their first try defective probes with their second try, and never came out with it. Their SL2 module has been riddled with issues and was supposed to be replaced with a second version, which has failed to appear for about three+ years and counting.

If you have a problem, you have to basically self diagnose by asking for help here or on Reef Central, or the DA online website.

Oh wait, they did release a new product a few months ago, the Reefkeeper Elite Titanium Edition, which is a RKE with a white backlit display......big whoop. How about taking care of the hundreds of poor customers with non working SL1 modules and defective salinity probes?

Sorry if I sound sarcastic. I own and use two RKE systems, and one RKL system, and they are dependable, but I am too invested monetarily in the product to go Apex, but if I were able to do it over again, I would have an Apex system. Digital Aquatics has sh*t for customer service.
