Cyano algae problem

Ok so I've decided to turn my lights off and cover my tank for a couple days to get rid of it but what do I do about my corals and feeding my fish? Won't not having the lights on affect them and how do I feed them with the lights off?

Everything will be fine for a few days. Fish can find food in the dark. They could even go a few days without being fed. They do it all the time in nature.

Fish don't need to eat every day.heck that might be part of the reason for the cyano

Ok thanks a bunch and if I do feed them (they eat pretty much anything) should I feed them a couple pellets or a frozen food square?

Edit: And yea maybe lol I just feel bad if I don't feed em daily atleast a little lol id be pissed if I didn't eat daily lol

no frozen food if you're trying to get rid of cyano.

how big is your tank again? if you put a whole square in a small tank= cyano!

I'm gonna do a water change tomorrow then lights out. For two or three days?

Edit: 30 gallon. And I put a whole square in my 15 too but I have no cyano in there....

Oh and the squares of food are baby brine so its kind of a small square

I give one square of frozen a day or every two days. I have 3 5" tangs, a 5" trigger, a large pair of clowns, a 4" file fish, a 3" yellow Coris wrasse, and a 3" bass. They are fat and well fed. Cut WAY back on how much you feed.

Geeeeezzee lol well u definitely have way more than me lol Ill definitely go to every other day lol I usually just do pellets one day then square the next and so on is that still to much? I can just feed a square every other day if you think that's a better idea?

most Aquarists with longterm healthy fish feed multiple times per day, just not a lot at each feeding. Feed enough where in 5 minutes, all food is all gone.

Certain frozen foods are perfect to be used like this, PE & Hikari Mysis Shrimp with a few drops of Selcon does wonders.

It's very important to have multiple nutrient export systems to remove nitrates and phosphates. Some will only remove one or the other(GFO, activated Carbon), and some remove both(Carbon dosing, skimming) but at different degrees......

Chemi-clean is a great fix for cyno by the way as long as you follow the directions "to the T", it clears it up in 48 hours......

again, it's generally the same idea, removing nutrients....

I'm not sure what brown algae you are talking about, maybe diatoms? direct me to your thread or pm me with info & pics....

diatoms (if that's what you are talking about) can be more difficult....

I would cut those cubes into quarters..

I can't cut them they are single little squares I get the baby brine shrimp pack from petsmart. And I actually today replaced all the sand, changed alot of the water and changed the filter so that should make a huge difference and from now on I'm cutting way back on feeding amounts! Thx y'all this all really helped and I learned alot about good feeding habits

Can't you leave your actinics on during the lights out? I have before and found the algae still died.

How is your circulation in the tank? I recently had a cyno bloom due to reducing the flow, I had to add another circulation pump to address the issue.
