1) I realize cyano is a symptom that points to another underlying issue, which I'm trying to pin down and correct

2) Yes, additives are dangerous.

THAT being stated... I dosed my tank 4 days ago with CHEMICLEAN. 24 hrs later a moderate cyano outbreak is COMPLETELY GONE.

The dosing is 1 scoop (VERY SMALL SCOOPS) per 10g, so I loaded 13 scoops. Skimmer off for the duration, and moved mp40s to a more "oxygen enriching" location. Following 48 HRS.. I changed out 25G of water, and will do another change tomorrow of 15G. I also introduced fresh carbon to help get the stuff out of the system.

Not only is the cyano gone (for now), but there appears to be NO ill affects to anything.

Hopefully this will give me a leg up and finally put this stuff away for at least a long while.

I just wanted to share the success.

Edit: here is the link to the stuff.

USE WITH CAUTION... of course.....

You will need to do lots of water changes. Skimmer will over skim for about a week. That stuff does work well. My cyano started with biopellets. The pellets are in the cup and the cyano has never came back. I am now more a tradtionalist with refugium and gfo.

The stuff works well when used exactly as directed. The only thing they are wrong on, at least IME, is your skimmer will go nuts for a fairly long time. This can be easily dealt with by raising it up in the sump for a while. Also, make sure you vacuum out all the cyano you can before you treat...less dead stuff to spike ammonia levels.

I've also had success with it too. I get an outbreak a 2 or 3 times a year on my 65 gallon. I've never been able to track the actual source even though I've changed up sooo many things. I'm now rinsing my frozen food to see if that keeps it away. So far, so good after probably 4 months since the last outbreak.

Funny thing is I've never had it in my 95 gallon tank which has been up and running for 2 years now....

Used it once about nine months ago and it did work great! Went on a business trip for 2 1/2 weeks this July. Fed with auto feeder which apparently I adjusted for too much food. Cyano is back despite two weeks of almost starving the fish... diminishing the light, and water changes. May give it a shot this week end.

The skimmer going "crazy" is the bio load from your bacteria that died in the sand bed from the medication.

no... i feel like it is the additive that "foams" when put through the skimmer pump :)

NOW.. the BROW GOOOP that I'm skimming out.. IS dead stuff yes :)

I did a big water change... 1 day after... my skimmer (bubble King mini 200) is working perfectly again.
