After all that stuff with the rhizo, I got to thinking.... What is the easiest was to tell between a sun coral and a dendro? When I google search for images, they all look the same.

Blue zoo says that they look the same for the most part, but a dendro will open during the day time.

This thread from RC states that all dendros(except Australians) are illegal to import.

Are they?

Is this info from blue zoo accurate about a sun coral not opening during the day? I thought if they were stimulated by "stanky" foods, they would open any time.

I own sun coral, and until today, never questioned whether it was sun coral or not.

Sun coral can open anytime

The dendros I've typically seen are of the branch variety, which are easily identified.

I've never seen some of the dendros in the link

My Sun Coral opens at all kinds of different times. Light, dark, before feeding, after feeding. I love the fact that I can fill a void in a dark place in the tank. Hate that I have to spoon feed it every week though.

Do you have a good link for the dendros you've seen? I've always thought sun coral opens when ever it wanted, too. Buttttt I have a black that will only open an night, no matter what, and an orange that opens when ever you do so much as to walk in the room(slight exaggeration ), ok maybe as soon as I stick my hand in the water.

Where did you get the black? I've been waiting for them to become availble on liveaquaria.com

These pics were taken 20mins after cyclopeeze

Edit: Oooooh the black.... I didn't realize those were so sought after! I got it from the Aviarium. I'll try to get a night pick of it so you can see it open. It is very pretty!! It's got a little white sponge that is starting to grow on it now.

The feeding "tenticles" on the dendro look more like colored Rhizo tenticles. I find my dendro doesn't open that much during the day but is wide open at night.

I did not read the links but dendro is the FAMILY, the GENUS Duncanopsammia, Tubastres, the sun coral, cup coral, black sun, Tubinaria belong to. The family Dendrophylliidae.

Schwaggs the Rhizo is in a different family I think.

I believe so as well. I only indicated the dendro tenticles look similar to Rhizo tenticles.

If they have enough time and money to come harass some one over coral, then I would seriously question how my tax dollars are being distributed.
