DIY sump builders - how did you build your drain area into the sump?

Did you make a box out of glass or use a big pvc pipe or what? I was thinking of using two big pvc pipes to fit filter socks over the top of them.

How did you guys do it?

Especially interested to keep things super quiet in my design too.

There are many ways to do it, you can do the pvc thing you are talking about, you can just put in a glass baffle and build a bracket to hold the socks, you can put in first baffle and then cut a piece of acrylic to fit over it and cut the openings in the acrylic to hold the socks. Since you are keeping the design a secret and no one can see it then I can't really tell you how I would do it!

I made a spill way out of acrylic that hold three 4" socks. Both drains just dump in. Ill post a pic this evening.

Right now I just have a plain Jane 75gal I'm using as a sump and have two 1" spa flex drain lines going to it. I saw some diy guides where they make a box out of egg crate and zip ties that the filter socks drop into.

I'm fiddling with my sump now, but I'm currently using a 4" PVC pipe with a 4" filter sock and two 1" returns going into it. It seems to be working well, and pretty quiet.

In the past, I filled the 4" PVC with rubble as a bubble trap. That way I didn't have to change a filter sock (good for when I was out of town for over a week). It worked well also.

I'm trying to modify my sump to make it easier to change the filter socks and it's been a real pain. Just when I thought I had it setup, the drain pipe started gurgling like crazy and I couldn't seem to get it quiet until I went back to the old unfriendly setup

Oh, and i did accidentally pull the stand pipe out of the bulkhead while messing with it which scared the living *&#*#( out of me when all of a sudden my whole overflow drained into the sump in about 2 seconds. Was full of muck too, and raised the level of my sump so high it hit my led lighting.

i'm curious to see some pics anyone has of their setup. Specifically for drain lines.

That seems like a simple get it done kind of job I could do. Did u raise the bottom of the pvc pipe up to let the water out the bottom or drill holes in the pipe or what?

Heres mine.
Works well. Socks just pull out the top nice and easy. Has i slight waterfall noise but nothing the stand doors dont silence. The key is to keep the drains close to the spillway so you dont get alot of splash. Running a mag 18 WFO.

Hey JohnIII, interesting setup. I'm trying to understand what you did though. It looks like there's 1 drain line draining directly into a sock and 2 other socks for overflow in case the main sock fills? There's also another line spilling in but i'm not sure exactly what that is.

Its a 220 with a closed loop. Started to run out of room lol. The 90 in the foreground is the right overflow box. The one that is half over the sock is from the left overflow. Just adjusted for noise. There is a lip on the right side that is 1.5" above the sock level. It is 1" below the top of the sump In the event all three socks clog water can spill over the edge into the sump.

Both actually. The pipe had holes drilled from when it was a rubble-filled bubble trap, however it's elevated on egg crate because I raised the skimmer.
