I'm planning the lighting for the "someday" big tank upgrade. What I want to have is some high quality SE reflectors, preferably Lumenarc/Lumenmax/Lumenbright etc. They don't necessarily need to be finished on the exterior.
It seems that "standard" is for a MH reflector to light a 24x24 inch area.
Is there a reflector made that is designed to cover more width? If there were a reflector that would cover, say, 24 deep x 32 wide, then I could light the 8' tank with 3x400w lamps. This would save substantially on running 4x250w lamps, which is the backup plan. I would like to avoid achieving this by raising the lights high off the water, so that I keep strong PAR numbers.
I realize the energy cost of 3x400w is more than 4x250w... but when you factor in cost of the equipment and cost of replacement bulbs, the 400w setup would save me some pretty decent money.
