Gen1 MP40 (called MP40)- not wireless. No many around that I can see. I think they just pumped water and had an adjustable flow rate. No flow patterns.

Gen2 MP40 (called MP40w) Communicates with other MP40w pumps in a Master/Slave type setup for synchronous or anti-synchronous pumping. Several pre-programmed flow modes. Pre-programmed Feed Mode and Night Mode that takes the pump to half the normal flow rate for a period of 10 hours I think.

Gen3 Mp40w (called MP40wES) Has all the capabilities of the MP40w plus:
length of night mode and feed mode is now programmable. You can turn the pumps on/off from a button on the controller. Has new Wave Mode called EcoSmart that has two different sub-modes. You need a back mounted pump to make full use of the EcoSmart Mode, so for EcoSmart you need three pumps (back, left, right) to use the EcoSmart mode in the way Vortech Marine intended. The MP40wES communicates with the MP40w in all modes except EcoSmart. The MP40wES works with the MP10wES and the MP60wES as well.

Cost of upgrading an MP40w to an MP40wES is about $100, and is easy to do. I did it with three of my current MP40s.

The above is not complete, just what I remember of the top of my head. You can get complete info at ecotechmarine.com. If anyone sees anything I missed or got wrong, please post it.

what he said.

keep in mind.. again what he said... that you'll need three ES mods to take advantage of teh ES modes.

I second the fact that they are easily upgraded. I've done it twice.

I could be wrong but I don't think the original MP40 non-wireless was Gen 1. The original MP40W, wireless Gen 1 had a metal screw and laquer coated magnet that rusted within a few months of use. So Gen 2 came out with a rubber coated magnet, nylon screw and nut, and improved firmware.

Not sure, but when folks sell MP40w pumps they call them Gen2. Maybe Gen 2 of the MP40w?

Non wireless MP40 (not MP40w) controller looks like this:

It's important that it is a MP40W Gen 2 because of the wet side components and the firmware which can only be updated via an already updated Gen 2 driver.

Bud's the man for info on older pumps then. When I bought my first MP40w, the Gen 2 was all they made. My hands on experience starts from there.

The gen 2 models have improved wet side internals. This included a coated (rustproof) magnet, different drive shaft, propeller and nylon screw/nut. There was another newer revision that had a shorter drive shaft, longer propeller shaft and a ceramic bearing with more precise tolerances. It wasn't called gen 3 but it made a huge difference in balance/alignment and how long you can go between vinegar baths. The last revision ships with all the ES units.

I had heard that the programmable night mode in the 40Es units has a programming bug in which when you set it, the next night it starts 15 minutes later each night. If you set it to start at 12:00, next night it starts at 12:15, then 12:30, 12:45, etc. I haven't tested this out because I don't use night mode.

Dave, what all comes with the upgrade kit for MP40W to the ES version?

I was looking for a little more detail on exactly what you get and what you have to do. The controller is wired to the dry side.

Take the old one apart and rewire it? Is the power supply or cord different?

same power supply andcord, you take a few screws out from the old controller and move one connector to the new one.

oh and the update is good from the first gen pumps also

Question I have for you is... what if you've got 3 MP40wES pumps and one Gen 2 MP40w?! I've got the 180 almost ready to go and was actually wondering this the other day. Do I put one ES on each side and then one on the back and the Gen 2 MP40w on the back as well? or Do I go with an ES on one side, the other two ESs on the back and the MP40 along the other side?

I would use the 3 ES on 3 sides to get the eco modes option and the 4th old one wherever you feel you need more flow, maybe independent as the emergency flow in case of a power loss. Or just sell it 3 is enough for a 180

This is correct. They have corrected the problem, but older ES boards still have the issue.
