I have found lately that alot of folks didn't know this. So as a neat idea I thought of making this post. So here we go you all have heard of fairy bass, or Bartlett anthias before. But did you know the Bartlett is actualy hermaphroditic? Basicly it has both sex organs a shim. I can think of another such fish that's the same way that alot of us have. Do you know what it is?? If y'all think of any other neat facts about the reef world. Please help educate us all and share :)

Similar but not identical acropora species can hybridize during mass spawning events on the reef, giving rise to new species. This from a BBC documentary I watched.

This same documentary was about an incredibly diverse and prolific reef area in Indonesia where they counted 350 distinctly different types of acropora species, but genetically, there were actually only about 170 species present, showing how the same acroporas can look very different, even in the same reef.

I remember reading a quick article a while back where clownfish are sexless (hope I am quoting this right) where if there is no dominate female then the strongest one will chose that position in the tank and it becomes female. Same for a male. All others remain sexless as long as the dominates are present. Someone correct me if I am mistaken.

I do believe it's a one time offer on turning female and only up till they are matured then they can no longer change. But you are correct on then being a sex changing fish

Flame wrasses can change sex as well (female>male), I believe, but they cannot change back. This allows a female or sub male to change into a male or super male if the current one in a harem dies.

Do you remember the name of the documentary?

Hi Angie,
It is part of a BBC Series called "Equator." The title of the show was "Reef of Riches." On Xfinity, it was broadcast on a channel called HD theater, channel 844 in my area (Sandy Springs). One of the best reef documentaries I have ever seen.

Ok....reef related. I've got a few but here is one...Perhaps one of the most strange facts about coral reefs is that if a human cuts themselves on coral and the wound is not cleaned properly, the coral can continue to grow inside of the cut.

Be careful working on your tanks ladies and gents! :)
