Eels

I had a small snowflake eel for a couple of years but as he got larger he got really aggressive. Eventually he had to go.

I've kept a snowflake eel from juvenile stage that I got from marine designs about 8 months ago. I kept him krill only because hes housed in an 80G with a Pair of Maroon clowns (equally as old) and a dwarf angel. He hasn't had a taste for fish and I think this plays into housing them throughout their life safely with fish as tankmates. Now I will mention in the clowns case being equally old my male is now an easy snack for him; luckily they have hosted an anemone since 2 months old. At this point though Ive never seen him go after a fish really. Usually when I add a new fish he will size them up at first by really slowly seeing if he can fit his mouth around them; but hes really never made an effort even with smaller fish. Hes now probably 16 inches at minimum at around 8 maybe 9 months of age. Every 3-5 days I feed him about 8 or more krill; generally every other feeding or so I try to vitamin soak them to make sure hes still getting an all around diet. Silversides are an option as food and will really beef up an eel but like I said before giving a fish diet can lend itself to many issues itself in a Fish Tank. Another thing to note, YOU HAVE TO HAVE A TOP. I dont care how much you think you CAN house them without a top, I will go ahead and tell you, you WILL find him on the floor at some point... these guys are escape artists; for the top I use clear mesh 1/4 inch.

Edit: This was a picture from 7/21 before my tank rearrangement and alot of coral addition.

My daughters LOVE seeing the Eels at the LFS's. I'd love to have one in a tank one day, but I know "the big goose egg" about them. My fish are too small at the moment to even think about it for one. I'd have to wait until I get a bigger tank for two. Three, how do you do anything inside your tank with those guys creeping around? I've seen their teeth! Bigger than any fish teeth in my tank. Though, I was surprised that the smallest fish in my tank has the biggest teeth. Royal Gramma! Now if only he'd put the bully clown in his place. Them two, not the best of friends on the playground.:lol2:

You would be surprised how docile some eels become; opposite can also be said it really is dependent on the eel itself. My eel is the dumbest eel I have ever seen is usually what I tell people :P. He only tries to nibble my finger if I stick it in his face like a piece of food. He IS however voracious when it comes to ripping his food in half while I am feeding it to him.

Edit: O yea... these guys are practically blind

Really! Hmm, how big was your Eel when you bought it? Most of the time, when I see them at a LFS, they are already as long as the Eel in the picture. I think it would absolutely cool to have one. How are they as far as care, ie. water parameter, disease? How big do these guys get? Supposed that depends on feedings wouldn't it?

love eels! I had a 3ft. Sharptail Eel. Extremely docile and never attempted to escape. If you have a big enough tank, look for an eel in the Snake eel family. They are "rigid" and look like snake, but are very docile and swim more than moray type of eels.

When I bought him he was about 7 inches and 1/4 the thickness.

Edit: As far as growth the one you see in the picture is probably about 60% full grown size as far as snowflake eels go. They can on some occasions get much larger. Health wise mine has never had an issue.

What are the ramifications of getting bit by one of those guys? Our fingers about the size of most of the fish they would be interested in. :lol2:

Well I'm considering adding one just was wondering about everyone else. I used to have one I had for@4 yrs, then when I moved its back got hurt some how and it died a few months later. He would eat out of my hand and swim through it while I cleaned the tank.

Well cool. Thanks for the schooling. Might have to consider one of these once I get a bigger tank put together.

I have a male and female pair of Japanese dragon eels. They are being fed squid, clams and smelt almost daily. They still have the desire to hunt though. To date, they have ripped apart 6 of my 9 yellow tangs, and have recently started hunting my sohal tang.

I'd get rid of the tang and keep the eels those things look amazing. Or move eels they are to cool to get rid of.

Id really like to come see all your setups Brian

Mc524 my son was also an eel enthusiasts but with my nano tank it wasn't an option except for the golden dwarf moray which i could not find. So i opted for a engineer goby wich looks alot like an eel to my son. We made a network of tunnels out of pvc to keep it from tunneling under the rocks that sofar it is happy with.
