Effect of light through glass

Hi everyone,

I have one of the fluval edge tanks. I was thinking of increasing the amount of light. I would use acrylic to construct a bigger hood and install additional lights - not sure what type yet. My question is, would putting the light above the glass significantly reduce the par value of the lights?

No, it wouldn't be any different than having a glass top on your tank.

If you're going to put a hood, why bother having the edge tank? Why not get a 5.5g or 10g?

Thanks. Actually, I am making a partial hood, the entire top will not be covered.

Glas actually "eats" quite a bit of PAR and especially PUR...

Do you have an idea of about what percentage loss to expect? I know that will depend largely on how clean the glass is, but I a counting on the fact that I will be keeping the water level high enough to prevent much dirt build up on the top glass.
