Anyone recommend something different maybe cheaper?

Have you considered T5 lighting? Or just two of the Evergrow LEDs off of EBay? Both of those options would probably be cheaper than the photon 48. Not to say that the Photon 48 is a bad choice, it seems many are happy with theirs.

You can grow JUST about anything under ReefBreeders. You may want to run 120 degree optics at the edges of the LED for full coverage on a 5' tank. Also you would need to keep the light settings low with your water depth.
However, take a look at the new Reef Radiance leds with full Apex compatability. If Im not mistaken they are the same lights with different specifications.

Is there a timer for these evergrow lights?

I know my Photon 32 was great over a 4 foot tank. Not exactly the same, but a good comparison I think. There was no visable shading, but I'm sure the par was down on the edges.
