Filter sock material, which is best

Well I'll have to try that. Can you get the seventh generation at like publix? Thanks mojo.

Not sure - just look for something organic, "non-detergent", or "green". I'm not sure if it makes a difference, but the idea of putting any residual detergent in my tank just doesn't sit well with me.

I almost threw my felt ones out and went with the mesh, even though the felt work so much better. When Simon Kruger told me they could go through the wash, I gave it a try, and ordered a dozen more felt ones the next day. :)

Felt is the way to go if you want crystal clear water. Like Mojo has said, they can be easily washed. I run a bleach cycle & let them dry; they come out nice & clean & I don't have the detergent expense. Dave's "hose 'em down" method would work too.

Also, not all socks are created equally. I tried a cheap one & they're very thin. The one's I have now are much thicker, but are tripple the cost. I'd like to see or buy a few of the ones on the site Grouper Dave listed to see the quality. Yep, sadly I'm a filter sock snob!

Mesh is pointless, imo.

Raj,
Why do you think mesh is pointless?

My mesh socks clog up and overflow just like felt ones. I have to rinse them out every 3-4 days...only difference is mine take a lot less work to clean than felt.

I feel the felt does a lot better job with polishing. I have no empirical data on this, so imo only.

I also find the mesh to be of poor quality; I have issues with dainty materials (I may need therapy for this).

I suspect that the ratings (100,200 etc) are not accurate whatsoever. It just doesn't seem likely there is anybody actually taking the time to test the material. Also, with the influx of Chinese goods, there's not telling what you're buying. This is with any material, mesh or otherwise.

I no longer run socks but the ones I bought from the link I posted were the 100 micron felt. I bought the 25 count and they lasted me over a year. Actually I still have some of them. Occasionally the stitching in one would unravel in the washing machine nothing a quick run the sewing machine wouldn't fix.

The thought of you behind a sewing machine made me chuckle a bit; nothing you say matters anymore!

I can't believe you went there! lol I learned to sew in case I did not find a great humanitarian like my wife to take care of me. Wouldn't you know I picked one that could not sew . lol

The filterbag.com mesh bags are quite tough, actually. I've been using the same three 200 micron bags for months. The mesh is like ripstop nylon in consistency.
