I tried socks before and didn't like them but in my new build, I'm seriously considering going back to their use. I've seen where many of the new setups are multi-sock and I like the idea. So here's my questions:

1. What micron sock have you found to be appropriate?
2. What media have you found be most effective (ie: poly felt, nylon felt, mesh, etc)
3. What diameter are you using?
4. Are you a single sock or multi-sock setup?

I'm sure I'll come up with more as this progresses.

i currently run a single sock setup but im thinking about building a sock tray and running dual socks

I use the mesh ones from SEA. They are pretty sweet and don't clog as fast as the felt ones. I have a DIY holder that can utilize 3...but I only really use 1.

Jeff, don't buy the socks...check out youtube...there are several DIY filter socks...buy $5 worth of material and you can make a lot out of a yard.

I have been told if you run socks, you MUST clean daily. Otherwise a Nitrate factory...

I don't know about that one. I know plenty of users that only change them out every 3-5 days depending on how much debris they collect.

+1

I run 100s. Both mesh and felt and I change them about every 3 or 4 days.

I currently have a single sock setup. I'm envisioning a new sump setup that'll most likely incorporate at least two. I currently switch between round 4" socks that range from 25 to 100 micron for different uses. If I'm stirring things up I go with the 25's to collect more gunk or the 100's for good overall "pickup". I also use 7" rectangular eshopps 200 micron socks when things are settled and I want to go longer distances between changes.

4x14 100 micron filter bags from filterbags.com. Change every ~3 days.

How do you all wash the socks? I have heard if you flip them inside out and rinse daily, they will last longer.

 except I buy mine from brs.

Jeff I have 100 and 200 Micron nylon socks. There a little bit more expensive but work great. I run a 7" and a 4" in my sump. The 100 Mircon is used after a stir-up of sand and or water changes and glass cleaning. The 100 Mircon only last for a couple of days and does a great job capturing the fine stuff. The 200 Micron socks are used on my system every day and I replace the sock every week.

The nylon socks clean up great and besides that, you can wash them with a hose. I have a 5 gallon bucket with some light bleach in it and I stick the dirty socks in the bucket prior to hosing them down. I take a Sharpe and mark the Micro number on the sock. This way I can go to my sock stash and I don't have to figure out what Micron of the sock. The tags falls off after cleaning the sock.

Hope this helps...Dave

I flip mine inside out and set them outside to dry. Then I wash them in the washing machine on gentle cycle. (I'm using the larger socks with the large plastic rectangular top.)

I'm curious about this as I am always freaked out about any unwanted chemicals entering my system. Id like to hear some more peoples advice or how they clean their filter socks in a efficient manner.

I use a single 4" x 14" felt sock and wash them in the washer with light free detergent and bleach and a double rinse. I let them air dry for a few days before I use them again. Change out every 3-5 days depending on my schedule.

Interesting I never thought of that way. I guess that is what I will start doing from now on. Thanks for your input.
