Fish in overflow

Hello.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to get a fish out of the overflow box?

It’s a bangai cardinal.

You can pull out/off the pvc pipe and allow the fish to go down to your sump. It should come off. (Just be ready with extra water coming thru. Or you may use small net to fish em out if you get lucky.

This happened to me with a small tailspot blenny, I ended up getting two small extendable nets from amazon because I was scared of my plumbing ha. I'd position one the full length of the overflow and one maybe half so you maneuver easily. It took me 3 or 4 tries but was ultimately able to nab him by moving him up towards the top. If comfortable with removing the overflow, that's probably the easiest, just have something below to catch like a filter sock or net on the way down.

I puttied the area of the overflow he used to escape and haven't had any other fish go in.

A friend suggested siphoning the water out of the overflow and getting the fish out that way.

Not a bad idea but could make it harder if they position themselves in a way that the nets can’t reach them.

Here’s an update.

I went in for 1 fish and got 2 out.

It was a challenge. I siphoned the water out and could reach the bottom of the overflow but I couldn’t see anything. I kept feeling them in my hand but couldn’t get them out.

Eventually they got tired of swimming and just gave up.

Mission accomplished!

Good job! I had to resort to removing my stand pipe to rescue my yellow wrasse.

I put the smaller Bangai in the display tank with the bigger one, and he got beat up really bad. I had to put him back in the small tank.

I would suggest a screen over entire tank. The wrasse will jump again, guaranteed. Luckily it was into the overflow this time. Next time it might be the floor. I put eggcrate on top of tank and wrasses still jumped through. I learned the hardway. I had a male and female flame wrasse. A clear plastic mesh where light can still penetrate, fish will never be in overflow/floor again.
