Hey all,
My fox face has like a clear film that's peeling off him or her, does anyone know if this is normal or something I have to worry about?
What is it?

Got a pic?

It's lights out right now, I'll post one in the AM.
It's not the first time I've seen this on him, it peels off like little clear to milky sheets of film and every one else eats it?!

+1 just bought one a coupel months ago. It had a film when I bought it and have not seen it sense.

Foxfaces are able to shed their skin to resist infection and parasites. Completely normal. Mine did the same, and I came across this information upon further research. It came to my attention when I saw the film in my 55g mantis tank. When he outgrew the mantis tank and moved him to my other 225g tank, the film followed him...

Happy to know that this is a normal issue and I don't have to worry about him kicking the bucket on me.

I've never seen that on foxfaces. Are its eyes clear? Eating/behaving normally.

If it's sloughing it's at the very least, a sign of stress, and at worst, some sort of infection/infestation.

A picture would be helpful to distinguish the difference.

Its specifically called the cuticle. Do a Google search on fox face cuticle.

I found this: http://forums.saltwaterfish.com/t/388289/foxface">http://forums.saltwaterfish.com/t/388289/foxface</a>

I learn something new every day :)

I've seen something similar on lionfish, I wonder if it's the same thing (I'll be googling that).

That thread indicated that if it's shedding a lot, it may indicate a problem, which is kind of what I was thinking. I've never observed a routine shedding, despite having handled hundreds of rabbitfish in the last 14 years or so. So OP's could be a routine thing or it could be an indication of an infestation.

Just as with lionfish, they will shed their cuticle as they grow.

Hey jenn,
I have seen this fox face do this several times while in my care, other than the shedding he seems to be perfectly fine.
I'm going to take this as a normal issue with this fish and fine it in my mental computer.
Thanks
